Johns Hopkins University (Graduate Coursework)
Hello! I'm a caring tutor who is extremely patient and loves working with middle and high school students and adult learners who haven't been in school for years. I was a volunteer tutor for many years working with children and slow-learning adults. That experience helped to hone my skills in targeting problem areas and finding new ways to present material. My tutoring practice is full-time at my home or on-line between the hours of 10am-9pm, seven days per week; and I have a pet bunny, mentioned in case of allergies.
Some of my background: I graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor in Biology, and then went onto my dream job working at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. While there, I attended graduate classes in Environmental Chemistry. I then moved to Durham, NC and worked at Duke University Medical Center in the Department of Molecular Mycology. I have authored several publications in top-tiered scientific journals.
When I left the lab in 2005, I attended the American College of Health Sciences where I earned a degree in holistic health and aromatherapy. Please read my blog on aromatherapy and its use for people with ADD/ADHD to help calm them and focus better.
I look forward to helping you or your child. Hello! Cristl had helped my HS junior turn his failing math grade into an impressive B. He had struggled in math for years, and although he had been tutored in the past, his grades were barely passing. Cristl was able help him understand complex material in a way which was easier for him to understand than how he was being taught at school. It was refreshing to see him gaining confidence as his lessons progressed. In addition to being extremely knowledgeable, Cristl was accommodating to our schedules and always kept the lines of communication open. My only regret is that I did not find her sooner. Thanks so much for a job well done Cristl!
We have been using Cristl now for about a month and are very pleased with her. She has been a great help to my son with his math. Her communication with me is excellent and she has even reached out to my son's teacher to be sure she is reviewing the right content. Very happy that we started this tutoring!
Christl is excellent in every way a student could want. She's great at communicating, very patient, thorough and exceptional at making hard things understandable. She has a gift for teaching material uniquely to the student's specific learning style. I am grateful to have her as my tutor.
Cristl is very sweet, patient and knowledgeable. She is wonderful to work with. As an adult student it is very hard to remember math that I have not done in years and Cristl does whatever she can to help me clarify what I don't understand. I would recommend Cristl, she is just wonderful!!
Cristl helped my daughter raise her math ACT score. My son struggles with math and Cristl has helped him enormously. He says Cristl can teach him confusing math topics in 5 minutes. She makes the complicated seem easy. Cristl is very nice and treats children with patience and respect. If you are looking for a tutor, choose Cristl! I'm glad we did!
Cristl is a excellent tutor. She helped my son pass 8th grade EOG math, while others told me they couldn't help him because he just had too much to catch up on. Finally, I see he has fun with math now because he understand it. She knows all the tricks shortcuts to make math fun. Now we ready for high school. It's gonna be much easier with her. Thanks, you are the BEST!!
Our son started tutoring with Cristl for Honors Algebra II about half-way through the semester. At that time he had a low F in the class. Despite the fact that he had made A's or B's in math classes in the past (including Algebra I) we had pretty well resigned ourselves to him failing this class. By the time he went into the final he was one point away from a D. He ended up making a solid B on the final which was enough to give him a D for his final grade -- enough to pass. Our son, my wife and I are thrilled! In our eyes, our son and Cristl working together pulled off a miracle.
We found Cristl to be patient and extremely flexible and generous with her time. We would highly recommend her to anyone who needs extra help and support. Thanks, Cristl!
My 9th grader was struggling in math, but he really didn't want to go to a tutor. After the second session with Cristl, he was asking her to send him more practice work! He said she was great and he was understanding his Math a lot better after only 3 sessions. He's feeling much more confident in preparing for his Math final.
Cristl is a great tutor! She always responds quickly and is always willing to fit us in even if it means 8 o'clock at night. She has helped my daughter with Algebra 2 tremendously. In one hour she learned more from Cristl than she did at school for weeks. Highly recommend!
We are so thankful we found Cristl. She has helped my son bring his algebra grade from an F to almost a B. She explains in a way he understands and is flexible with our schedule. She is the best!!!
It has been great working with Cristl. My daughter was very anxious about working with someone new but Cristl made her feel comfortable from the start. She is very patient and does a great job explaining. She is also very flexible with her schedule. Thank you Cristl!!
Both my kids 11th grader and 8th grader love her.
She is very sweet and patient with the students.
I am sure my kids will do well on math with her help. Thank you Miss Cristl.
Cristl is great! She's flexible with her time and worked great with my 17 year old son with his Honors Algebra 2 class. She helped him get through the class! Thank you Cristl.
Cristl was great! she was a very professional, patient and friendly. My daughter was really happy, thank you, I highly recommend.
All I can say is WOW. My son actually looks forward to his tutoring lessons. His improvement has been nothing short of miraculous and she has boosted his confidence as well. Cristl is a amazing.
Our son was very behind in geometry due to absences in school. Cristl has been so helpful with not only getting him back on track in record time but also with establishing a good working rapport with him. Cristl's gifts for teaching and healing have been an answer to prayer!
Cristl is a tremendous resource. She's very patient, knowledgeable and extremely encouraging. As a non-tradition college student (adult), education (especially standardized testing) has changed dramatically over the past twenty years. The RT (respiratory therapy) program at my community college uses the TEAS exclusively to select 25 students for the program each year. The last Biology class I had taken was in 1983 while in high school. Cristl and I met twice a month for three months in preparation for the TEAS. We reviewed Life Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, Genetics and Math. When I took the TEAS I felt that I had scored pretty well but I would have to wait until the selections were made to really know. I received my acceptance letter today and I'm ecstatic.
I would recommend Cristl to anyone. She's a great teacher and she really cares.
Cristl, Thank You So Much!
We cannot be happier with Cristl! She is a wonderful Math tutor and my 9th grader has gone up two grades since we started tutoring with Cristl. My daughter has dyslexia, but this is the first year that she has struggled with math. Cristl is very patient and explains the entire process. My daughter is now studying for the EOC in math with Cristl. I would recommend Cristl to anyone, especially for Math!
Cristl is very patient and thorough, and makes sure my son understands each topic before moving on to something else. She is very knowledgeable and caring. Once there was a discrepancy with the answer of a math problem, and she kept working on it even after my son's session was over. She called us at home to discuss the problem and was able to work it out with my son at his next session. She is also flexible when scheduling and was understanding when we showed up at the wrong time. She would make an excellent school teacher!
Cristl connects easily with teens and has certainly made a difference in my daughter's life. Hopefully, Juliana's grades will continue to go up with her understanding of Algebra. I have the utmost confidence in Cristl to teach Juliana and to build the necessary foundation that's been lacking. I am most appreciative.
Cristl was very patient and helpful. She was able to help me clear up my confusions regarding different concepts in biology. She encouraged me to "talk it through" all the while making sure that I had the correct information. Cristl is very knowledgeable in her field and I would highly recommend her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
