I am a graduate of the University of Maryland, with a B.S. in Mathematics and M. Eng. in Systems Engineering. With over 10 years' experience tutoring and 5 years' teaching at the middle school, high school, and community college levels, I have learned that teaching is more than just delivery of information. I believe that educators must instill confidence in their students, for they will only be successful when they believe it is possible. I also believe that most students struggle with advanced concepts in mathematics, not because they are incapable of understanding, but because somewhere along the way, they missed some fundamental concepts, resulting in a flawed foundation. Without a strong foundation, students struggle to build upon previous knowledge, resulting in a lack of understanding and frustration. Taking the time to repair the foundation is always the first step towards not only addressing the challenge at hand, but preparing students to navigate the challenges yet to come. My daughter has always struggled with Math. Eighth grade algebra is no different. Sara has identified some of the foundation pieces where she is rusty. During their hour session, Sara offers her practice pages in those areas along with tutoring on the weekly lessons. Her math grade has improved by one letter grade; this would not be possible if she was not comfortable with Sara. She tells me Sara offers help and nudging without judgment and provides her the confidence she needs to help her through the lessons. I joke that Sara is her “woobie” (her security blanket). Way to go! Thank you Sara!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
