The learning style and retention methods of students are the key to successful learning. These are presented in a pleasant, interactive manner. Through discussion, practice and the relating of real life examples, students are made aware of a variety of strategies that have been used successfully. Through selection of strategies that are personally meaningful and effective, students create a repertoire of skills that will serve them as life-long learners.

I have taught the sciences in middle school, junior high and high school, always including ways to study effectively. For a Colorado high school, I created a study skills manual that was taught during the freshman year to boost effective learning.

One-on one tutoring was done for The Tutorial and Learning Center for Mesa College and additionally, an independent company, The Learning Center. Through these learning centers, I was able to work with middle school students, high school students, college students and non-college adults.

My next goal was to work at a teaching university, assisting pre-service teachers. After receiving my Ph.D.in Curriculum and Instruction, I taught student teachers for Central Washington University for twelve years, incorporating study skills into my presentations and workshops. I retired as a Professor Emeritus.

I would like to continue to assist students in reaching their goals of effective learning, having fun along the way.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

The study skills component of my teaching started at the very beginning of my teaching career with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. I taught the Sciences in middle school, junior high and high school. Drawing attention to roots and stems of words is very helpful in the Sciences, but its value extends into many other subject areas. I also incorporated note-taking skills, as well as, comprehension skills into these classes.

Additionally, I wrote a study skills manual for a Colorado high school that was used in freshmen English courses to introduce sound study habits. I also tutored one-on-one for a private learning center and worked with middle school students through adults on helping each one create a personalized study plan and perfect skills that were most effective for each of them. Various skills accommodate different learning styles. Our task, as student and teacher, was to identify the most effective skills and practice them to become more proficient at the selected subject.

I received my Master of Arts in Secondary Education from Western State College of Colorado. I tutored and taught classes in study skills for Mesa State College's Tutorial and Learning Center. During that time I created a course for people who wanted to attend college but needed substantial review. The course consisted of a study skills component, as well as, a math, grammar and English component.

From the University of Denver, I received my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction and continued my career in Education at the university level. I worked with student teachers for over one-half of my career. I continued to assist my student teachers with information about various study skills problems that may arise for the students they taught.

The categories involved in study skills are many. Certainly, thinking skills, memory, comprehension, reading, phonics, vocabulary, organization of time and materials,a designated study time and place, test-taking strategies, questioning ability, and practice taking particular types of tests, all fall within the study skills purview.

My goal is to help the student quickly identify the strategies that best assist him/her to attain mastery of the subject/s studied. With a positive attitude, we can have some fun along the way in achieving life-long learning techniques.
