My name is Kayla, and I'm an MFA student in the Creative Writing Program at Columbia University. I received my BA from Brown University, where I double majored in English Literature and Literary Arts, for which I received honors. Last summer, I worked as a teaching assistant for Duke University's Talent Identification Program. I helped teach both a writing and literature class and held "College Question and Answer" sessions. Working at Duke TIP was an incredible experience that helped me further realize my love for teaching. During this past semester, I volunteered as a creative writing teacher at a Manhattan high school. I am currently a college counselor for adult participants in Columbia's Community Impact GED program. I love helping students of all ages develop and achieve their academic goals.

I specialize in the college application process, and tutoring English (including writing, literature, grammar, ACT writing, ACT reading). I also tutor history (including early Christian history, world history, and geography) and basic math. I begin by establishing goals with my students, and give the students weekly challenges on the path toward achieving them.

Though I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I am willing to reschedule sessions. I ask for regular feedback to make sure that both the student and parents are satisfied.

I often hold sessions in libraries or cafes on or near Columbia's campus, but if it's more convenient for the student, I'm happy to travel to other locations throughout Manhattan (and some areas of Brooklyn and the Bronx).

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed on your academic path!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have a lot of experience with taking the ACT, so I'm very familiar with the test. I received a nearly perfect score on the English section, and I know to help others study to improve their own scores.

Bible Studies

I have extensive personal background in the Christian Bible due to attending church, Sunday School, and Bible studies for my entire life. At Brown University, I took many Religious Studies classes on Christianity including "The New Testament/Beginnings of Christianity," "Studies in Early Christian Diversity," "Origins of Western Morality," and "Christianity in Late Antiquity." I considered applying to graduate programs for Early Christian Studies, with the intention of teaching it at the college level.

College Counseling

As a graduate of Brown University and a current graduate student at Columbia, I have significant personal experience with the college application process. I attended a public high school in rural Mississippi where I had no access to a college counselor, so I did extensive research in order to figure out as much about the process as possible. During my summers as an RA for high school summer abroad programs in Italy and Spain, I advised student on college choices and the application process. Last summer as a Teaching Assistant for Duke's Talent Identification Program, I led "College Q & A" sessions as an elective activity. I'm currently working as a college counselor for adult participants in Columbia's Community Impact GED program, helping them consider college options, set goals, navigate the application process, fill out financial aid forms, and providing general guidance and support.

English

At Brown University, I doubled majored in both English and Literary Arts. I'm currently pursuing my MFA at Creative Writing at Columbia University. I've worked as a teaching assistant for an English class at Duke's Talent Identification program, and I have experience teaching English for the GED.

Literature

I've worked as a teaching assistant for a literature class at Duke University's Talent Identification Program. I received my BA from Brown University, where one of my majors was English literature. I'm currently pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing Program at Columbia University, which places a heavy emphasis on reading. Reading is one of my greatest passions.
