My name is Kayla, and I'm an MFA student in the Creative Writing
Program at Columbia University. I received my BA from Brown University, where I double majored in English Literature
and Literary Arts, for which I received honors. Last summer, I worked as a teaching assistant for Duke University's Talent Identification Program. I helped teach both a writing and literature class and held "College Question and Answer" sessions. Working at Duke TIP was an incredible experience that helped me further realize my love for teaching. During this past semester, I volunteered as a creative writing teacher at a Manhattan high school. I am currently a college counselor for adult participants in Columbia's Community Impact GED
program. I love helping students of all ages develop and achieve their academic goals.
I specialize in the college application
process, and tutoring English (including writing, literature, grammar
writing, ACT reading
). I also tutor history
(including early Christian history, world history
, and geography
) and basic math
. I begin by establishing goals with my students, and give the students weekly challenges on the path toward achieving them.
Though I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I am willing to reschedule sessions. I ask for regular feedback to make sure that both the student and parents are satisfied.
I often hold sessions in libraries or cafes on or near Columbia's campus, but if it's more convenient for the student, I'm happy to travel to other locations throughout Manhattan (and some areas of Brooklyn and the Bronx).
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed on your academic path!
