Hello. My name is Jeremy S.; I am a professional educator and college professor with over 7 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I've just moved to Jackson, Mississippi to find a calmer, slower sort of life after many years spent in the often chaotic and fast-paced lifestyle of metropolitan Atlanta.
I hold a Master of Arts in Professional Writing and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Among my graduate course and academic work, I have completed courses in Composition and Rhetoric, English as a Second Language (ESL), Intercultural Communication, and Creative Writing and Poetry. After earning my graduate degree in 2004, I quickly began teaching, first at a 2-year school, Chattahoochee Technical College, then at Kennesaw State University. Since then I've spent time teaching and working with students at Valdosta State University and Georgia State University. Additionally, I have tutored in both volunteer and professional levels since 2003. My tutoring experience ranges from elementary school students with reading disabilities to advanced high school students looking to qualify for advanced placement and early college classes.
During my years teaching I have often encountered the notion that the ability to write is some strange sort of innate ability or gift. This is a defeatist mentality that only leads students down the road to apathy and failure. Concerning writing, or even concerning life itself, I believe all things can be improved with practice. With that concept in mind I strive to make sure my students get the most out of the time they spend practicing. I believe that academic success is the culmination of a series of 'best practices.' With this principle in mind, my time spent in front of the classroom (or in one-on-one tutoring) is spent guiding students towards the adoption of solid and effective writing habits.
