I love teaching and learning! Supporting students as they develop skills and increase their knowledge is incredibly rewarding for me.

I draw educational materials from my own projects & writings as well as published reputable sources. I present material a student can master then build upon their success week after week. If a certain approach isn’t working well, I’ll consider other methods to teaching the content. Some students have unique learning styles and I'm sensitive to presenting the material in a way that's meaningful to them. I work to determine the best methods for each student in dealing with certain subject matter.

I typically assign students a limited amount of reading or homework to help prepare them for a productive session. The idea is to expose them to the content they are attempting to learn in a way that is not overwhelming or confusing. I tend to give students assignments that are do-able at whatever level they are at the time with some elements that push them to go farther. The other purpose of the assignments and reviewing them is to help to build up the student’s confidence in dealing with the material independently.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Architecture

I'm a registered practicing architect in Missouri and Illinois, licensed since 1993. I graduated with a professional degree (Master of Architecture) from Washington University in St. Louis in 1990.

In addition to my architectural practice, I've been teaching in the University's Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts in the School of Architecture since 2011.

You can view samples of my work in my portfolio upon request.

Drawing

I began taking formal drawing and art lessons in 1975, and have never stopped developing my skills and talents. I've taught architectural drawing and design for graduate and undergraduate students between 1990 to present. I am highly skilled at freehand sketching, detailed renderings, use of color and a wide range of media (traditional as well as digital).

Geometry

As a licensed practicing architect, I use and apply geometry on a daily basis to problem solving at a practical level. I enjoy working with students to help them to understand how to work logically with two and three dimensional geometry problems.

Whenever possible, I use examples of geometry from real life, make drawings or find images to help students connect with the issues involved which can sometimes seem overly abstract or theoretical.

I work with individual students based on their learning styles. I'll try different approaches if they aren't quite getting it. I'll show them how to break down difficult problems that might feel overwhelming. I give them the tools to figure out the problem in a step by step fashion, show them by example and then give them the chance to do it for themselves. Then we'll review their work with the understanding that errors and mistakes offer the best opportunities for learning.

Photography

I have over thirty-five years of continuous experience and experimentation with a wide range of photographic techniques and equipment. 35mm, black and white film, color transparency, twin lens reflex and digital cameras. I am experienced in portraits, studio lighting, architectural, landscape, abstract, macro and micro photography. I have had many works published, exhibited in galleries, purchased by collectors and earned awards in national competitions.

Writing

I've written and published books and articles on a variety of non-fiction subjects. I earned an award for my Master's Thesis and have been writing a continuing blog over the course of many years. Professionally I've written many reports, letters, contracts, technical specifications and other business-related communications.

I would be pleased to share my knowledge and skills with you in support of your educational goals with respect to writing, regardless of the level at which you are presently. I work with each student on an individual basis, tailoring our work to address your particular needs and goals.
