I have spent the past 27 years immersed in educating my seven children. I have escorted each one through math, grammar and writing skills. I have learned scrutiny by being a relentless editor for the papers they turned in to a third-party grader. The work payed off with full-ride scholarships for each one that attended college. Those who chose technical school did equally well. My last student graduated in December, 2012. I am now free to share my passion for learning and growing outside my family.
My students have gained strong performance in writing by developing a good grasp of grammar. Knowing words, having a strong vocabulary, is possessing good building material, while having a clear knowledge of grammar sets the stage for building strong, clear expression. I believe in using sentence diagramming to verify framework for assembling strong words into clear messages.
Likewise, in math, learning the basic principles of calculation - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division - enables the student to achieve answers swiftly without electronics. I believe in drill to memorize the basic 2+2 facts so that the facts become second nature. Once grasped, those basics open the world of math to performance with ease.
Twelve of our education years (1996-2007) were spent living in a small African village in Botswana in southern Africa where I learned patience in working with English as a second language and a hunger for a wider worldview. I bring to any tutoring relationship maturity and persistence to seek student success.
