There is so much that I could say about education, my background and my passions. However, I know that time is limited, so please allow me to sum up my thoughts. I will do my best to keep it short and sweet.

In my opinion, education is not something that you do for a relatively few years as a child, teenager or young adult. It's an adventure that will not be completed until that-day-that-shall-not-be-mentioned. As a tutor, I try to build a desire for lifelong learning in my students by encouraging them to engage in the world around them. This involves asking questions, thinking critically and "supposing" (thinking creatively). This doesn't look the same for everyone; I strongly feel that it is important to "learn" the student in order to adapt the methods appropriately. My goal is to help the student learn in the way that he/she learns best.

I have a long history in education. I was a private school teacher for a year, a tutor for 5 years and a public school librarian for three years. I've enjoyed working with students from age 8 through early 50s in subjects as varied as GED preparation, multiplication tables, essay proofing, chemistry, piano, and finding the zeroes of functions by determining all possible real zeroes (p/q), graphing the function in order to disqualify a portion of the possible zeroes, using synthetic division to isolate one true zero, and factoring to find the rest. It sounds complicated, but it's actually very fun! (At least, I think it is. Your student may not share that view... yet.) I've seen some students make incredible academic leaps, and I've seen others rejoice over a seemingly small achievement. Every success is worth celebrating.

Those are the highlights of my experience with education (specifically tutoring). If you would like clarification on any point or would like to hear more about me, my methods and/or how I can help you/your student, please email me! I would love to hear from you!

Good luck on your academic pursuits and "may the odds be ever in your favor."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been in the Christian church all my life and am very familiar with the Bible. I have taken several theology classes during both my undergrad, where I was only one class shy of a Biblical Studies minor, and graduate studies.

Cooking

I have been cooking and baking since I was a child. I was raised in an Italian home, where food is very important. My grandmother taught my mother and both of them taught me. I am excellent in following directions, but I also know when to improvise and how to learn techniques in the midst of a recipe. In an environment as variable as cooking, flexibility is essential.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with children of varying ages for the last 14 years. I am familiar with general elementary curriculum, as well as how to keep children engaged and on task. Specifically with this age group, I think that knowing why the material is necessary is as important as knowing the material itself.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook for several years and am very familiar with it. I am capable of managing folders and contacts, changing preferences, working with the calendar, and many other tasks. In addition, I am familiar with the Microsoft Help website, so if I do not already know the answer to a question, I know how to find it!

Microsoft Publisher

During the last four years, I have worked closely with Microsoft Publisher to create cards, fliers, posters, invitations and even pages in a school yearbook. I can navigate my way through this versatile program with ease.

Phonics

As a lover of language, I believe that the building blocks of that language are essential. Phonics open up invaluable doors of communication and I take them very seriously. As an English major, I took linguistic classes and learned not only how words are formed, but how the sounds themselves are made.

Piano

I have played the piano for over 20 years, during many of which I taught myself. I have taken professional lessons and am currently pursuing more training. I know the basics of music theory, including how to read sheet music and lead sheets.
