I am an experienced tutor, especially in ESL. Having completed an international TESOL certificate, I am implementing successful teaching techniques with each of my students. I love to see my students excel in every area of English, whether it be speaking, writing or reading! With 24 years of classroom teaching experience under my belt, 11 of those spent overseas teaching ESL conversational English and writing, I have encountered a wide spectrum of students and cultures.

Individual tutoring in ESL during my years overseas was truly the norm as both young and old sought me out for private lessons. Starting with individual assessment and proceeding with area-specific lessons, my tutoring sessions are challenging yet fun and will produce not only competence in the subject matter, but also confidence in oneself.

A passion of mine is writing, and I myself am a writer having self-published two books. I have walked native English speakers and second-language learners successfully through the writing process. Many former students who have gone on to higher education have told me how very thankful they were for the writing skills I taught them, which brought them tremendous confidence and success in college. I believe in a holistic approach to teaching and learning all skills connected to English. As troublesome areas emerge with a student, I hone in on them and address them thoroughly from a variety of angles.

Having studied English literature at Northwestern University, received my M.Ed. from the University of Virginia and taught grades 8-12 in public, private, and cross-cultural school settings, I know the challenges that students face. My heart's desire is to help them reach their goals.

Currently, I am teaching ESL to adults at a local community college.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I've been leading Bible studies since college back in the early 1980s. Expository studies are my favorite, and I especially love helping young people see that Jesus is real and serious about loving them!

English

I've had a passion for teaching English since the late 1980s. Writing is an especially favorite area in English that I love to help others improve in, and I am ready to begin working with any level of student from grade school to college level.

ESL/ESOL

I spent eleven years in Hungary teaching in a bilingual Hungarian High School. I helped develop ESL writing and conversation curriculum for grades 9-12. All of my students successfully passed either the intermediate or the advanced level English language exam.

I absolutely love helping people develop their English skills!

Hungarian

I spent eleven years living and working in Hungary. During that time, I attended an intensive Hungarian language course, after which I passed the intermediate level language exam. I also received private tutoring in Hungarian. Szeretnek tanitani magyarul amerikaban!

Literature

One of my favorite things to do as a classroom teacher was to teach literature. Somehow, I was able to bring nearly any book alive for even the most reluctant readers. I taught the novel Lord of the Flies to my students in Hungary and one of them selected this novel for her oral English exam at the end of her four year study. Not only did she do well, but also received highest commendation for her oral exposition of the novel, and this in her second language of English! If you have a reluctant reader, I'd love to help turn him or her on to literature!

Proofreading

I love proofreading! Some people have said that I'm the one whom they want to read their pieces of writing and proofread because I am so thorough. No project is too big or too small.

Public Speaking

All of my students in Hungary were required to do oral presentations in class during all four years of high school. In addition, they were required to take oral exams at the end of their high school careers, speaking in front of a panel of teachers and examiners. I successfully taught and coached my students in the skills of public speaking so that 100% of them earned proficiency marks on their English oral final exams. Throughout my teaching career, I have required every student to learn basic public speaking skills and practice those in front of their peers.

Soccer

I began playing soccer in Colorado when I was just seven years old. I continued through high school and the competitive leagues and on into college, playing Club Soccer at Northwestern University. When I landed in Virginia, I joined a co-rec adult league in addition to refereeing youth and adult games, which I'd begun to do while in high school. I played for a women's club team in Hungary for a short season, and then returned to the U.S. to coach the girls varsity soccer team at a private Christian school in Charlottesville, VA for six years. I love working with young people.

Study Skills

Having been a classroom teacher for over 20 years, I have helped many students develop successful study skills. My area of specialty is in English with emphases in writing and grammar. I can work with students of any age.

Writing

Because writing tends to be very challenging for many people, I have spent a good deal of my adult career as an English teacher focusing on helping students learn how to write and improve on their skills. I've had tremendous success with both American students and those from other cultures. All of the students I taught in Hungary over the course of eleven years passed the writing portion of either the middle or advanced level English language exam, with most achieving the highest level of excellence.
