As a college English teacher, I find that working individually with students helps them grasp topics they have difficulty understanding. I work with students on every aspect of writing -- from brainstorming and outlining papers to constructing sound paragraphs and proofreading. Working individually with students allows me to figure out what area of writing troubles them the most. Every student is different.

While working with students, I not only help them learn to write better, but I also become more knowledgeable about them as people. This knowledge helps me find out why they might be struggling. Students often are turned off by writing early in their schooling. If I can find out their history, I often can help them improve their attitude and, thus, their writing.

My background includes three years as a college English teacher, five years as a substitute teacher in my local school district, and almost 20 years as a journalist.

I find that my background in journalism helps me as a teacher in many ways. Yes, I can write about almost any subject, but more important, I have experience interviewing people of all ages and building a rapport with them -- a very useful skill for a teacher. I find that when I express interest in a student as a person, he or she welcomes the invitation to open up about life.
