Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am a native speaker of English, born and raised in the United States of America. Currently I teach English as a second language in private and group sessions in person and over the internet via Skype.

Over the last four years, I have also volunteered with organizations, schools, and churches to teach English as a Second language to those who wished to obtain Citizenship, continue there education on a high school or college level, prepare for job interviews and oral presentations.

I am a certified English as a Second Language Teacher, having completed training in Missouri, Indiana and Puerto Rico.

I work with beginning level students to the most advanced. The course is designed for the student to talk the majority of the time. Therefore, detailed grammar explanations are reserved for explanations and only when necesarry. You will always have homework and progress reports.

Public Speaking

I worked as a Mentor with Marketing Students at The University of the Sacred Heart in San Juan, Puerto Rico who have to give oral and written presentations in English to their customers. My job was to help to them to prepare mentally and materially for their presentations by recording them so they can see how they look and sound. Then I made suggestions on how to improve delivery by focusing on body language, proper enunciation of words and using the correct word choice to project the right visual imagery.

For group presentation,s then I worked with them on group appearance, body language, dress, transitional phrases between each presenter, audience participation, dealing with nervousness, making mistakes, etc so that the presentation flows and has personality.

While I do not work specfically with the content of the presentation, I may make certain suggestions on word choice that complement the style of the speaker or speakers to keep the audience engaged and positively responsive.

Social Studies

I work in a public school system at a school that is specifically for ELL's (English Language Learners). In my class I assist with American History and American Government. Many of our students this year scored proficient on the Missouri EOC (End of Course) exams. Those who did not, scored Basic and very close to Proficient and have only been in the country for less than two years, not only learning English as a Second language, but also American History and Government.

Spanish

From 2009 to 2012 I studied Secundary Education with the emphasis in Spanish while living in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My teaching style is conversational. That is to say that from the very first day we are speaking in Spanish, never English! You will learn to think in Spanish, rather than attempting to translate from English to Spanish or vice-versa.

The class is focused on speaking so that you will be able to converse starting the first day. So, if you are not into learning grammar rules in order to speak the language, this class is for you. That is to say you will be learning to speak Spanish and not learning ABOUT spanish. If you have specific plans for learning spanish, such as your career, trip, or trying to communicate with your hispanic family members, please be sure to let me know.
