I have been involved in the field of chemistry since 1995 when I became a research scientist for Pfizer Research and Development in Groton, CT. I received a BA degree from the University of Montana and a M.Sc. degree from the University of Utah. During my time at the University of Utah I worked in research and teaching general and organic chemistry classes. I also provided targeted tutoring sessions for students struggling with general or organic chemistry college level courses. Early in my career I also taught general, organic chemistry and physics classes at a private high school in New London, CT.

My career in chemistry has taken me around the world in various roles. I have developed a deep appreciation for what the study of chemistry; math and other sciences can do to increase our ability to impact the world. My experience with the World Health Organization in the area of orphaned disease taught me that we have a responsibility to use our abilities and gifts to improve those lives around us.

I have considered a number of ways to return to the field of teaching. I appreciate those opportunities where I am able work individually with students who are struggling with the topic or have a desire to take a more aggressive role in their education. My goal in working with students is to create an experience that is positive and encouraging. Each student has their own unique set of goals. These objectives can be completing a high school curriculum positioned well for acceptance into colleges of their choice or successfully completed a course at a community college or university. Whatever the situation the goal is to be successful in educational endeavors.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have a master's degree in chemistry and have a background not only in education but also a successful career in industrial research. I have worked with many students in the study of mathematics and the sciences to improve their understanding of these topics to increase performance on standardized testing and coursework. I take the time to determine the specific areas that are most challenging to the student and then use that information to lay out a plan to address those challenges. In all cases my students have increased their test or coursework scores. I currently work in secondary education in teaching general sciences, chemistry and AP physics. I enjoy working with students of all ages and academic levels

Organic Chemistry

I have a M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Utah. I have worked in the field of organic chemistry for nearly 20 years. I have taught and tutored chemistry and the University of Utah and at Coastline Christian Academy in New London, CT.

Public Speaking

As a successful research scientist, I have given presentations at numerous conferences and research meetings. I have also been successful in business and have been asked to give keynote addresses for groups of community colleges in Maryland and international conferences in Europe and China.

I have taken classes in public speaking in high school and college. I was in competitive public speaking in high school and was a judge for state competitions. I have completed the Dale Carnegie courses on public speaking and "How to win friends and influence people". I have taken short courses on preparing presentations using using software such as Microsoft's PowerPoint programs. I have used this software along with data management programs to produce materials necessary for quality presentations.
