Hello! I'm a graduate of three top-notch schools: Carleton College (BA, Political Science), University of Chicago (MA World Religions), and Johns Hopkins University (MFA Writing). But the quality of my education is just one of the factors that make me an excellent, well-rounded tutor. I also have nearly a decade of teaching experience as an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, The University of Baltimore, and Columbia College, and I have consistently gotten rave reviews from my students.
My background is particularly strong in the humanities and social sciences, fields in which I've written numerous papers. I have also published essays in top-tier literary magazines. Besides having excellent editing and revision skills, I have spent a great deal of time mastering the principles of English composition: introduction and thesis formulation, argument construction, sentence styling, grammar and punctuation, flow, paragraph coherence, and the logical flow of ideas. When helping students with their papers, I guide them through all the stages of the writing process, from research and brainstorming ideas to thesis formulation, development, drafting, and final editing. If needed, I can also teach proper citation methods for MLA, APA, Chicago style guidelines, and make sure you don't accidentally plagiarize others’ work.
Standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, and GRE are a major concern for many students seeking tutoring, and I’m particularly well qualified in this area, especially in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and essay writing. I make it a point to keep up with all the latest test preparation guides on the market as well as recent changes in the tests. On the most recent GRE, I scored in the 99th percentile (780) on the verbal section of the test, and I did well on the math as well, though that is not my area of expertise. For the SAT and GRE I utilize a special vocabulary building method that helps students memorize ALL the words most likely to occur on the test. If you learn and use the techniques I teach, your verbal score will increase dramatically.
Whatever your goals are, please contact me; I will do my best to help you achieve them.
