Hello, prospective students!
My name is Derrick, I'm a current Senior at Maryville University in St. Louis, MO; I'm a Psychology/Sociology Double Major with a Minor is Spanish. I graduated from Whitfield School in St. Louis, MO class of 2007. I attended the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University from Fall of 2007-Spring of 2010 before choosing to change my major and university. In both my high school and university experiences, I have been exposed to a liberal arts education, achieving proficiency specifically in all areas of the core curriculum, particularly excelling in languages (English and Spanish) and the Social Sciences.
I'm passionate about learning, my strongest academic areas are English, Spanish, Writing, Research, Reading, Psychology, and Sociology. I have a good amount of experience with the college process. I was a student at a prestigious college preparatory school (Whitfield School), which placed a strong emphasis on understanding the application process and properly preparing for the ACT and SAT exams. In addition, as a transfer student, I understand the unique challenges that this experience brings.
I plan to finish my undergraduate studies in May of 2014 followed by 2 years of volunteer work in South America as a member of the Peace Corps before applying for PhD programs in Clinical Psychology. In my free time I enjoy exercise, studying voice, and volunteer work.
I currently volunteer at Life Crisis Services, a crisis and suicide intervention hotline as well as Giant Steps, a special education and treatment facility for children with autism. In the past I have tutored both for Maryville University college students as well as K-6 students at Andrews Academy.
I look forward to meeting you guys and helping you on your road to academic and personal success!
