My name is Shaunna. I am 29 years old and have just moved to Stillwater from Duluth. I am a very motivated and creative person and would love to assist students in need of any artistic, musical, or language help (Spanish only). Below I have highlighted my experience with each area I specialize in so that you know a little bit more about me.
Education: I graduated from the University of MN, Duluth in 2004 with a B.A.S. in Psychology. I work excellently with children and all types of behavior. I have a background in both Western and Eastern approaches to Psychology. I am currently applying for my Master's Degree in International Nutrition so that I can do health work in Spanish speaking countries. In December of 2009 I went to visit the United Nations Headquarters and met with UNICEF to discuss educational/internship programs they offer and what they look for in hiring people, as this organization is my top goal to work with someday.
Music: I have been singing and playing piano since the 4th grade. I have been a professional musician since I was 18 years old. I play piano and sing and perform with a band. I was just signed with Spinout Records last fall and recorded by first EP with them in February 2011. Currently I am writing for a new record while learning new music computer software. As far as tutoring in music, I can assist in an elementary learning level with the piano. I have not sight read in years, so advanced playing will be more difficult. If the student is interested in composing their own music and learning chord progressions I would love to help with that. I can however help with voice. I know breathing techniques and exercises to strengthen the voice. I am primarily interested in helping those that want to create their own music.
Dance/Theatre: I was involved in drama and plays my entire childhood and through college. I started out as a Theatre major at UMD and had the experience of learning Voice and Movement exercises, improvisation and how to properly read Shakespeare. I love character development and am able to assist with that and understanding Shakespeare. I am also part of a fire dancing troupe called The Spin Collective. Fire dancing is an ancient aborigine art form which we have adapted into our own theatrical performance. I can help with choreography in creative movement, but do not have proper training in ballet, tap or jazz.
Spanish: I have taken Spanish since the 6th grade. I love the language and my goal is to again be fluent. I have lost touch a little, but I study on my own and plan to enroll in classes to speed up the process. In January of 2009 I moved to Costa Rica to teach English for 3 months. I absolutely fell in love with the country and the children and my Spanish had improved greatly. I was nearly fluent by the time I left. I continue to practice the language because I am applying for my Master's Degree in International Nutrition so that I may do health aid work in Spanish speaking countries. In December of 2009 I went to visit the United Nations Headquarters and met with UNICEF to discuss what they look for in hiring people, as this organization is my top goal to work with someday.
Creative Writing: I did very well in my English classes in high school and college. I have always enjoyed writing short stories, poems, and mostly song lyrics. My creative personality and skill in writing would make me a good candidate to assist in this.
Lastly, my tutoring style is laid back but efficient. I don't want the students to feel like I am their teacher harping on them. I want to encourage the student to have as much fun with the learning process and the challenges that come with it. I want them to feel comfortable with me so that they can build the confidence in themselves. I like to use creative methods while teaching and use tools that are going to be enjoyable to them. I love working with kids and hope that you find me to be a good match!
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
I hope this gives you a better idea of who I am and what I can help with.
