About Me:

Helping students reach new levels of success is my passion! I have a B.A. from Smith College and have completed several graduate courses in education (including assessment and intervention). I have been tutoring full-time for several years, working with students ranging from middle school to graduate school.

I tailor my support to fit each student's goals and learning style. While I help my students get through their assignments, I build their understanding of the skills needed to complete the work. Learning flexible strategies and underlying concepts is the key to building a solid foundation for future success.

Our Sessions:

We can arrange to meet at your home, a library, or a cafe of your choosing. I travel to Arden Hills, Circle Pines, Lino Lakes, Little Canada, Maplewood, North Oaks, Roseville, Shoreview, St. Paul, Vadnais Heights, White Bear, and parts of Woodbury.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is sometimes a student’s first time having trouble with math. It marks a transition to more advanced math coursework to come. But algebra is just math with new terms and definitions! Let me help you demystify algebra and lay a solid foundation for future mathematics coursework.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 builds on the terminology of Algebra 1 and introduces topics like complex matrices, advanced graphing, and systems of linear equations. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of new terms. Let me help you demystify math and lay a solid foundation for future mathematics coursework.

Discrete Math

If your school offers discrete math, you are in luck! I have experience tutoring several students in discrete math, and it is one of the more lively topics of mathematics. Discrete math is grounded in real-world problems, which makes it relevant and fun. I can show you examples related to your interests (biology, business, puzzles, etc.) as we explore this fascinating subject.

Elementary Math

Math is my favorite subject to tutor, because there are so many ways to teach it! I like to relate math to whatever topic interests you (sports, shopping, games, business) and explain concepts in multiple ways until we find what works for you.

Study Skills

My approach to study skills involves identifying goals, motivation, and strategies for making study sessions effective. No one wants to sit at a desk re-reading notes for hours, especially when it doesn’t give stellar results. Studying science isn’t the same as studying French, so why do we take the same approach? Let’s work together to find strategies that will produce results. I will help you set meaningful, measurable goals so that you can see your progress.

Here are two ways to do this problem. Let's use 6 people (Ms. Beckman plus 5 friends, if you use 5 your answer would end up being 10 handshakes).   Method 1: Let's model this by assigning each person a letter: a b c d e f <-- our 6 people   The handshakes would...

5.100 x 2%/100%  <-- this is how we convert the percentage to a decimal so that we can work with it 5.1 x 0.02  <-- notice I dropped those 00's after the tenths place, we don't need them, test makers use tricks like that to make a problem seem more difficult than it really is 0...

Let's just think of f(x) as another way to refer to y f(x) = y f(-2) = 1, is telling you that when x = -2, y = 1 f(-1) = 3, is telling you that when x = -1, y = 3 So they're giving you 2 points and asking you to find the equation of the line. (-2, 1) (-1, 3) To go from here,...

Patient and knowledgeable — Katherine has been tutoring our daughter for several weeks. The results were noticeable after the first week- in both classroom performance and confidence. She can explain the material in ways our daughter understands. Lauren even commented recently that math can be fun! Katherine is also prompt for lessons, responsive by email, and in all ways very professional in her work. ...
