Here are two ways to do this problem. Let's use 6 people (Ms. Beckman plus 5 friends, if you use 5 your answer would end up being 10 handshakes).

5.1 x 0.02 <-- notice I dropped those 00's after the tenths place, we don't need them, test makers use tricks like that to make a problem seem more difficult than it really is
Let's just think of f(x) as another way to refer to y
f(x) = y
f(-2) = 1, is telling you that when x = -2, y = 1
f(-1) = 3, is telling you that when x = -1, y = 3
So they're giving you 2 points and asking you to find the equation of the line.
