Thank you so much for considering me for tutoring! I have been an educator since 1989 when I graduated college as a bright-eyed new teacher and accepted my first teaching job in Tokyo, Japan. While there, I traveled the 5 islands, teaching students of all ages--from pre-K to adults--and I specialized in written and spoken English and German. The time I spent living and working in Japan left a lasting desire in me to always strive to be the best I can be, pushing my personal limits.

After many incredible adventures in Japan, I accepted an elementary teaching position in Los Angeles where I taught bilingual Kindergarten and then bilingual 4th grade. While there, I was involved in the GATE (Gifted and Talented) program, I taught adult ESL classes for parents in the district, and I honed my skills as a young teacher.

After taking a hiatus to raise my family and start a business, I returned to the classroom and have been teaching again for the past 6 years as a Cross-Categorical / Learning Disabilities teacher. I received my Master of Science in Education degree in 2007 and my Special Ed certifications in 2008. I have also been the Assistant Director of an Alternative Diploma Program and I have a lot of experience working with disadvantaged youth and those that need alternative instruction to succeed.

I have a passion for teaching that is evident in all I do. I always strive to be the best teacher that I can be. I consider myself a life-long learner and continually endeavor to implement current best practice into my teaching methods.

Algebra 1

Learning Algebra is often compared to learning a foreign language. I have the skills to make the language of Algebra speak to you! I will break down concepts with you and guide you to full understanding of the tools needed to be successful in Algebra.

Vocabulary

I work with students to understand the root meanings of words to ensure better understanding. We can put words into real-world context and provide mnemonic devises to ensure understanding and retention.

Grammar

I have had many years of experience honing my English skills. I am a paid editor and technical writer and have a very strong grasp of grammar and usage.

Prealgebra

I have a strong ability to teach and present ideas in various ways. This is valuable in PreAlgebra in that students need to be given various means to look at a problem in order to grasp it. I can bring real-world applications to the problems and teach to their modality.

Reading

I have very strong reading skills. I can help you or your child better understand the written word and provide strategies for improvement in reading skills.

Writing

Writing is one of my strongest suits. I am a published writer and have written creatively, technically, etc. for many years. I can guide your student to success by teaching writing strategies, help them find their voice, etc.

English

I have a strong understanding of the English language. As a published author, ESL instructor, public speaker, corporate trainer, and Master educator, I have had many years experience honing my skills in English. I can guide you toward success in the areas of grammar and usage, word roots and meanings, creative and technical writing, oral language, public speaking, and various genres in reading, etc.

Proofreading

I am a highly-skilled editor and proofreader. I will guide writers to creating work that is grammatically and phonetically accurate. I also will be able to offer vital direction for improvement in word choice and structure.

Spelling

To be a successful Spelling instructor, one must understand that children need to learn in different modalities. I provide this in spelling instruction by allowing children to explore words, and eventually master them, by using all of their senses.

ACT English

I have the skills and experience to teach strategies for passing the English portion of the ACT exam. I have personally taken--and excelled at--several standardized tests over the years. (SAT, GRE, Praxis I II III, etc.)I can guide you to understanding the methods needed to be successful.

Elementary Math

I am able to guide students to understanding of the underlying skills necessary to be continually successful in mathematics. It is not enough to understand how to "do a problem". Rather, I teach the children to internalize the concept in order to ensure transfer of the skills.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a certified K-8 teacher since 1989. I have taught in Japan, California, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. I have experience working with all types of students who present with all types of needs--emotional/behavioral/academic/gifted.

Public Speaking

I have been a successful public speaker for many years. In school, I won speaking contests and participated in Forensics. In college I took speech classes and, as an education major, I honed my skills speaking in front of small groups. As a graduate student and teacher, I presented at conferences and often gave speeches and presentations to graduate classes, fellow professionals and public schools.
