If experience and a good track record is what you are looking for, then I think I'm the right tutor for you. For 50 years, I have taught writing and English skills to students in many countries -- Australia, China, Ghana, Kenya and the U.S. I've published five books and I love teaching! I treat each individual student's problems starting from where they are. I've worked with students on all levels: high school through university -- graduate students as well. I can handle any aspect of the process: basic study skills to writing style, thesis and essay writing and tests -- my specialty is the ACT test. The point is what YOUR son or daughter needs. Everything I do will be guided by that.

ACT English

ACT English is mainly common sense and technical knowledge, and it's fun to do (if you know how).

I can teach you "how," and if you have problems with tests in general, we can deal with that too.

I work with the ACT Test Prep Guide, which means that you find out how the tests are put together and what to do to ensure the best answers.

ACT Reading

ACT Reading is designed to find out if you understand the ideas behind the reading.

There are some easily learned ways to make sure you are doing what the test requires. It takes a little time, but the majority of my students catch on quickly. Once you've got the "knack," it's easy!

Believe it or not, the test can also make reading a pleasure -- not a chore. Let's give it a try!

I am a published writer, and I've taught in colleges and universities for 20+ years. Proofreading has been part of my daily activities for years.

All of that experience means that I know all the "tricks" -- the ways to make proofreading interesting, which it is, if you know how.

"Proofing" is about "presentation" -- putting your best foot forward -- and who doesn't want to do that?

Reading is one of my favorite things to do. I like to share my experience with students of all levels: high school, college, university and graduate students, adults -- everyone!

Reading is the greatest gift you can give to your imagination. It's an open door to other worlds -- to new horizons and new ideas. Reading can inspire and make you more sympathetic, because it lets you in on what other people think. It can even help you know what you think. It's certainly worth a try!

Study Skills

I have taught elementary, secondary and college students for approximately 50 years. Apart from teaching the subjects needed (English, writing and reading, mainly) I have had to teach them how to study and learn the subjects -- the skills needed to learn effectively, efficiently and well, then retain what they have learned, and use what they have learned in different contexts. Each students requirements tend to be somewhat different, so that I adjust the various elements (concentration, focus, structure and context) to fit the student's needs.

Writing and reading are like ham and eggs -- they seem to go together, and what is learned in one subject automatically helps the other.

There are as many reasons to write as there are students at all levels of education. There are as many approaches to learning how to write as there are students. Each individual student's needs and problems is where I begin. There is no set method that works for everyone. It is a mutual exploration. The end goal is success.
