All of Jonathan’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Jonathan’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

Bible Studies

I have a master's degree in religion and have taken Bible courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. My training includes criticism, hermeneutics, Old and New Testament, and Greek and Hebrew exegesis. I have also taken courses in systematic theology, church history, and other subjects.

Elementary Math

Math has always been one of my strongest subjects. In middle school, I attended a math and science magnet program and skipped ahead a year in math. I reached precalculus in high school and took calculus in college. In my education master's program, I took a course in statistics. I work with many elementary children and can explain abstract concepts simply.

English

Not only have I studied grammar and writing, I have years of writing and editing experience and have even taught grammar, writing, and presentation skills.

Before teaching these subjects, I was an editor for eight years. I learned to write correct, clear, concise, compelling professional prose.

A bachelor's and two master's degrees have given me extensive practice in writing research papers. I have also worked at a library and library associations. In one position, I contributed to a research database. I can offer valuable insights into all phases of research writing.

If you want to learn how to put a paper together, how to communicate effectively, or how to polish your prose, I can help.

ESL/ESOL

My expertise in ESL comes first of all from teaching it in the classroom. Second, I understand language learning from personal experience, having studied five languages myself. Third, I have studied linguistics, so I understand broader issues of meaning, structure, sound patterns, and the relationship of one language to another. Fourth, I am an expert in grammar and have taught written and oral communication skills. Fifth, I have studied culture and developed many cross-cultural relationships, both in the United States and overseas.

General Computer

As a web editor and communications manager for years, I became very comfortable with computers and many software platforms. In my recent position as an instructor at a technical college, I also taught basic computer skills. Some students had almost never used computers before entering my class.

I excel at making technical subjects accessible to those with no technical background. I can get you comfortable with your computer so that you can acquire and use basic software, customize and update your computer, navigate the Web, connect with others though e-mail and social media, and use other basic functions. I can also show you resources to help you continue to learn.

Grammar

I love all things about language, and grammar is one of my favorites. I have eight years of editing experience and have taught grammar at the post-secondary level.

I learned many advanced grammar concepts from studying several foreign languages and earning a minor in linguistics at the undergraduate level. In my first graduate program, I continued to study languages and performed research in translation theory. In my second graduate program, I studied best practices for teaching grammar.

I excel at simplifying technical subjects, and grammar is one of my specialties.

Microsoft Outlook

I have ten years of Outlook experience. I have used it to send, receive, filter, categorize, and organize messages. I have used the calendar to track appointments and send meeting requests. I have also used the task list function and other features.

I have taught business writing, including how to use email effectively. This includes issues of clarity, etiquette, tone, and more.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used PowerPoint in both academic and professional contexts. Most recently, I created slides for class discussions while teaching at a technical college. I also taught students how to create their own PowerPoint presentations.

I can give you a foundation in the mechanics of the software as well as best practices for how to use it. I can teach you how to create and edit slides, achieve a consistent and professional design, understand the pros and cons of different transitions, and create engaging animations. Using PowerPoint effectively is as much about what to omit from a slide as what to put on it. I can teach you the purpose of slides and how to enhance your presentation rather than distract from it.

Microsoft Windows

I have used Windows my whole career as a Web editor, communications manager, and teacher. In my recent role as an instructor at a technical college, I taught the first class students took, and some students had not used computers much before. I helped them get comfortable with Windows and the most common software on it. I can make technical subjects accessible to those with no technical background, so no matter what your current level is, I can help.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has been a staple of my diet for more than a decade. I have used the software through my whole career as an editor and teacher as well as through two master's degrees. In my recent role as an instructor at a technical college, I taught Word along with other computer skills.

I have regularly used many Word features: all types of formatting, tables, track changes, headers and footers, footnotes and endnotes, mail merges and labels, and more.

I have successfully taught Word and other technical subjects to those who were not comfortable in those areas. I also worked for years in publishing, so I can offer insights on design, too.

Proofreading

I was an editor for eight years. I wrote, copyedited, and proofread print and online communications of all types. I also wrote many academic papers in my bachelor's program and two master's programs. In addition, I have taught grammar and writing, giving students one-on-one feedback on their papers and showing them how to proofread their papers systematically. In my master's program in education, I researched this very topic of how to teach students to edit their papers.

I can go over your writing with you and help you see places for improvement. I can also give you the tools for editing your writing more effectively.

Public Speaking

I have extensive public speaking experience. I taught ESL and citizenship to adults for a year. I taught writing, presentation skills, and computer skills at a technical college. I conducted workshops in one of my communications positions. I have given presentations at churches, both to whole congregations and smaller groups. I also took courses in public speaking in one of my master's programs.

I have taught people how to deliver presentations smoothly, professionally, and persuasively, using effective verbal and nonverbal communication. I have also taught strategies for overcoming the anxiety many people feel.

Reading

I have taught nonfiction and fiction reading comprehension. Nonfiction reading skills fall into four categories: understanding the words, relating the text to the reader's current knowledge, keeping the big picture in mind, and interacting with the text's ideas. These skills overlap somewhat with fiction reading comprehension, but understanding fiction involves analyzing characters, plot, dialogue, description, etc. To analyze story elements effectively, readers need to focus on developing observation skills.

Spelling

Spelling lists are usually compiled based on pronunciation, spelling patterns, frequency of appearance, or subject. I can help students with lists from school and supplement their studies with other lists. I can also teach students tricks to memorizing difficult words more easily.

Study Skills

In my recent experience teaching at a technical college, I found that many students had not received training in study skills. Because I taught the first class all students took, it was my job to ensure that everyone left the course with those skills.

I have tutored in test preparation and have researched study skills and related performance issues. Through years of project management experience, I also honed my organization and time management skills.

I can help you develop skills in organization and time management, class preparation and participation, effective research techniques, and test preparation. This includes such topics as individual learning styles, memory tips, project planning, using time efficiently, preventing procrastination, note-taking in and out of the classroom, test-taking strategies, and reducing test anxiety.

Vocabulary

Should students learn vocabulary just through extensive reading, or should they study vocabulary separately, too? Research shows that students who study vocabulary separately comprehend reading much better. Vocabulary study is also essential to SAT preparation. I help students develop a regular, well-paced habit of vocabulary study. And more importantly, I help students apply efficient memorization techniques that maximize their study time.

Writing

Writing is one of my favorite subjects to teach. I recently taught writing at a technical college, along with grammar, presentation skills, and other subjects. As an editor for eight years, I learned to write correct, clear, concise, compelling professional prose.

A bachelor's and two master's degrees have given me extensive practice in writing research papers. I have also worked at a library and library associations. In one position, I contributed to a research database. I can offer valuable insights into all phases of research writing.

I would love to talk with you about how I can help you with your professional or academic writing.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
