I am a chemist by profession, having spent 30+ years in the chemical industry. I know chemistry from a practical as well academic standpoint. After retiring in 2006 I embarked on a number of teaching/tutoring assignments, including: an instructor/lecturer in "Mad Science," an after-school science enrichment program; a math tutor in "Upward Bound," a program aimed at preparing High School students for college; a math tutor for Minnesota Math Corps, a math enrichment program for struggling math students (4th to 8th grade); a substitute teacher in the North Branch, MN school system.

My motivation for tutoring is several fold:

1) I believe it is critically important for the US to improve the comprehension of our students in the area of mathematics and science if we are to maintain our position as a leader among industrial nations. Through tutoring I can make an individual contribution in this effort.

2) I love chemistry and mathematics and enjoy teaching and learning in these areas. You never learn a subject well until you teach it.

3) I truly enjoy working with young people. It is such a pleasure to participate in their excitement when they are able to grasp a new idea or concept for the first time.

I am confident that, working together, we can improve your comprehension (and your scores) in science or mathematics. All I request of you is that you bring a desire to learn to our sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a BS in Chemistry from Saginaw Valley State University and an MS in Chemistry from Texas A&M University. My minor at SVSU was in mathematics. I accumulated 28 credit hours in mathematics with a GPA in this subject of 3.57.

I thoroughly enjoy tutoring in math, especially algebra. In an effort to brush up on my mathematics I recently audited a Calculus 1 course at a local community college. In doing so I recalled how much fun mathematics can be.

I am looking forward to exploring Algebra 1 with you. I am confident I can help your comprehension (and grades) in this subject.

Algebra 2

As a high school student – some years ago - I excelled in mathematics. I took every math course offered by my high school as well as several correspondence courses, mentored by my high school math teacher. When I entered college I chose chemistry as my major as this seemed a more practical choice for employment considerations, but I never lost my love of mathematics. As I pursued my undergraduate degree in chemistry I accumulated 28 credit hours in mathematics and achieved a GPA of 3.57 in my math courses.
Recently, I audited a Calculus I course at a local community college. This refreshed my math background and provided some useful insights into effective teaching strategies and techniques.
Given my training in mathematics combined with my continuing interest in the subject I feel confident I can help you improve your comprehension and achieve your goals in Algebra 2 as your tutor. I look forward to the opportunity to do so.

Chemistry

I have a BS in Chemistry from Saginaw Valley State University and an MS in chemistry from Texas A&M University. Additionally, I have spent 30+ years working in the chemical industry. Accordingly, I have a solid knowledge of both the academic and practical aspects of chemistry.

I thoroughly enjoy tutoring in this subject area. In an effort to learn more about teaching the subject, I am currently auditing an undergraduate general chemistry course at a community college. Here I am gaining valuable insights into how college level students assimilate new chemical concepts.

I am looking forward to exploring chemical concepts with you.

Elementary Math

My recent experience as a math tutor includes one year of service with Minnesota Math Corps. In this capacity I tutored 4th grade students who were a bit behind grade level in math comprehension. This turned out to be a rewarding experience for both me and my students. Based on the success I witnessed in the MMC program I am confident that I can help your son or daughter improve his/her performance and scores in mathematics.

Organic Chemistry

I have a BS in Chemistry from Saginaw Valley State University and an MS in Chemistry from Texas A&M University. Additionally, I have spent 30+ years working in the chemical industry. Accordingly, I have a solid knowledge of both the academic and practical aspects of chemistry.

As related specifically to organic chemistry my undergraduate work included courses in elementary organic, intermediate organic, organic synthesis, polymer chemistry I and polymer chemistry II. My graduate work included courses in organic chemistry and polymer science. My work experience was heavily weighted toward organic and polymer chemistry.
I thoroughly enjoy both tutoring and learning in the area of chemistry. For example, I am currently auditing an undergraduate general chemistry course at a community college. This affords me the opportunity to review basic chemistry, pick up some new ideas and techniques on the teaching of chemistry and observe how new students to the subject assimilate chemical concepts and principles.

I am looking forward to exploring the exciting world of organic chemistry with you.

Prealgebra

The fundamental purpose of pre-algebra is to prepare you for a study of algebra in high school and beyond. Algebra, in turn, is the gateway to higher mathematics and a valuable tool in science and engineering. I would like to help you become proficient in the math basics that will serve as a foundation for your future academic accomplishments.

Precalculus

Precalculus is a course designed for students who expect to pursue a degree in math, science or engineering. As the name suggests it is a precursor to a study of calculus. It is very algebra-intensive and includes elements of geometry and trigonometry, disciplines that will be extensively employed in calculus.
In pursuing my degree in chemistry I accumulated 24 credits in college level mathematics. This included course work in calculus as well as all the associated mathematical fields mentioned above. I would like to put this experience to work in helping you prepare for an enjoyable and successful venture into the exciting world of calculus.
