I've been tutoring or teaching (non-certified) pretty consistently for the last 10 years. I have training in effective tutoring methodology through the Reading/Writing Center at Concordia College. I love teaching and learning, and I am comfortable tutoring many and varied subjects, including high school math, sciences, social studies, English language and literature, composition, and Spanish. I have a special interest in tutoring English to non-native speakers. From my experience at the Reading/Writing Center and leading the Writing Center at Prairie Point Middle School and 9th Grade Academy, I'm very comfortable (and downright enthusiastic) about tutoring advanced composition.

I see my role as a tutor to be that of facilitator. I'm very attuned to affective factors that can interfere with learning (stress, frustration, etc.) and thus am very skilled in establishing a learning environment that is conducive to learning. I've had difficulty with subjects before, too, when they were taught in a way that didn't work for me, so I know how overwhelming that can feel! I love working with learners of all ages, especially grades 5-10 and I aim to make a positive impact on every student with whom I work.

Vocabulary

Many different approaches exist for learning vocabulary, but making it fun is really important for your brain to absorb the information. Relating it to what you already know (whether through the roots of the word or through really wacky associations) makes it stick in your mind, and I can help you learn what works best for you.

Grammar

Yes, I really do diagram sentences for fun, occasionally. I don't know if it's POSSIBLE to know all of the prescriptive rules for English because it is so complicated, but I can help you see what purpose the various words and elements of punctuation serve. This helps you see how they are all connected, so it is easier to retain the information.

Geometry

Geometry is very visual, and I like to use any visual aids I can find/make to help things make sense. All the pieces and parts of different shapes are related, so knowing certain parts can help you figure out the rest, and I can help you work through what you already know to tie it to what you are trying to figure out.

Spanish

Hola! I studied in San Jose, Costa Rica for four months during college and lived with an exclusively Spanish-speaking family during that time. I have the equivalent of a Spanish minor embedded in my major, and I've been a para in a Spanish class since then. I also have experience translating and interpreting. Writing

I tutored writing at the college level at the Reading/Writing Center at Concordia College for nearly three years. I also tutored writing at the middle school level for a year when I worked at Prairie Point Middle School and 9th Grade Academy. Whether you are trying to figure out exactly what to write, or you have it all down and it just seems like a mess, I can help! Citations in multiple styles are also something I can help with.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've found that teaching and tutoring kids at the elementary level is primarily about relationship-building and relevance. If kids don't feel comfortable with you or the learning environment, and if they don't feel that the information they're learning is going to be useful down the line, they simply aren't going to be able to learn it.
