ACT English

I was a National Merit Scholar and have always done exceptionally well on standardized tests of English language skills. Whether you are taking the SATs, MCAs, or ACTs, I can teach you how to study up on the grammar, punctuation, usage and vocabulary portions of these tests and help prepare you for taking the test itself. Your scores will be significantly higher if you practice a few basic techniques and learn to recognize the various types of questions common to all standardized English tests.

ACT Math

I use test prep software by Edmentum and Edgenuity, specifically designed for the ACT Math test. After completing a diagnostic pretest, you will be assigned a prescriptive course of study based on your results. You will have unlimited access to the software programs for as long as we continue to prepare together.

I was a National Merit Scholar, scoring 740 on the math portion in my only attempt. I also tutor high school math up to twenty hours each week, having amassed hundreds of hours over the past three years. I tutor everything from algebra to calculus.
I can teach you how to master every skill expected of you for each portion of the ACT math test and help prepare you for taking the test itself.

Algebra 1

I tutor Algebra 1 on an almost daily basis, and am therefore very practiced, clear and effective in my approach. Parents thrill to see their kids engaged, and the kids typically tell their parents that I do a better job than the teacher at school. If you want a comprehensive and three-dimensional understanding of the principles of algebra, please contact me for a consultation.

Algebra 2

I currently tutor Algebra II, along with intermediate and college level algebra courses, all on a weekly basis. I explain polynomials and factoring, quadratic equations, exponential growth and decay models and other practical applications. Other topics include powers and roots, logarithms and their properties, working with logs of different bases and complex numbers. As a former high school "mathlete," I competed in and helped my team win the state math championships four years in a row.

Elementary (K-6th)

I tutor K-6 students seven days a week in family settings, typically with anywhere from 2 to 7 siblings at a time. I do homework help and supply my own reading and math exercises tailored to the individual needs of each child. I have amassed hundreds of hours of experience over more than two years of elementary school tutoring, and continue to refine my techniques. Last summer I directed a summer reading program for K-6 children and currently I plan lessons for and tutor more than three dozen children.

English

I have been working with ELL and ESL students of all ages for more than eighteen months now. While most of my ESL students hail from Somalia or Kenya, I am happy to meet people from all over the globe. I employ a variety of approaches and materials, am very patient, supportive and thorough. My objective is to make you more confident in expressing yourself in both the written and spoken word.

ESL/ESOL

I have been tutoring ESL/ESOL/ELL students of all ages for over a year now, and have more than 1000 hours of experience. I am Head Tutor for Building Community Within, an out-of-school time English language and literacy improvement program for Somali youth, grades K-8. This entails 16 hours of small group and one-on-one tutoring, both in the classroom and at the homes of clients. The number of students I serve continues to grow as word spreads about the quality of the training I provide.

I also tutor ESL/ESOL/ELL professionals currently working in the Twin Cities who simply want to improve their written and oral communication skills. I am pleased to report that my students have been showing marked progress under my tutelage. I also am happy to supply references upon request.

European History

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University with a degree in the History and Literature of Germany. My thesis was on the varieties of nationalism, from socialist to fascist, as they manifested themselves throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. I assist both secondary school and college students in understanding, analyzing and writing about all manner of topics in the field of European history.

Geometry

I tutor geometry on an almost daily basis and have assisted students at levels of understanding of lines, shapes, and two-dimensional space. In emphasizing the interrelationship of each, the conceptual framework necessary for making sense of geometry's myriad theorems and postulates begins to emerge, and memorization is replaced by an intuitive grasp of the material. Students are more engaged this way, and parents are typically thrilled with the results.

Grammar

I drill grammar every day using a variety of approaches, methods and materials. Whether you are an adult ESL student or have children struggling to construct sentences and remember grammatical rules, I can help.

Literature

I studied literature extensively at Harvard, Humboldt University (Berlin), the University of Chicago and Cornell. I teach young people critical approaches and analysis almost every day. We work on tropic language, narrative perspective, plot, character development and other essential elements of the basic literary forms. We read in a variety of genres and across all historical periods from many cultural and literary traditions. Currently, my students are reading critically acclaimed contemporary fiction and non-fiction titles.

Philosophy

I studied ancient and modern philosophy at Harvard, Humboldt University (Berlin) and the University of Chicago, reading extensively in the German tradition from Herder and Kant to Heidegger and Habermas. I also have studied structuralist, post-structuralist, post-modern and other theoretical movements, their application to the social sciences and literary criticism. I do not tutor logic.

Prealgebra

I tutor Prealgebra seven days a week; I continue to develop and refine very teaching techniques in order to ensure that I am consistently clear and effective in my approach. If your children are struggling to grasp the concepts or complain that they are not receiving enough instruction in school, please contact me for a consultation.

Proofreading

I proofread college essays and professional correspondence every week and have more than a thousand hours of professional experience. I can also check formatting, notes and citation style to ensure every aspect of your paper conforms to MLA or APA style.

Reading

Improving reading skills, whether for ELL children or adult ESL students, depends on understanding English phonemes, the sounds that letters make by themselves and when strung together in uniquely or typically English patterns. Your proficiency in reading will greatly improve as you come to recognize these patterns and pronounce new words correctly and with confidence.

SAT Math

I was a National Merit Scholar, scoring 740 on the math portion in my only attempt and 720 on the AP Calculus II test. I also tutor high school math up to twenty hours each week, having amassed hundreds of hours over the past three years. I tutor everything from algebra to calculus.

Whether you are taking the SATs, MCAs, or ACTs, I can teach you how to master every skill expected of you for each portion of the test and help prepare you for taking the test itself.

We will use the SAT Math test prep programs from Edmentum and Edgenuity for pretest assessment, a prescriptive course of test prep study, and final preparation before the actual test date.

SAT Reading

I was a National Merit Scholar and have always done exceptionally well on standardized tests of English language skills. Whether you are taking the SATs, MCAs, or ACTs, I can teach you how to study up on the grammar, punctuation, usage and vocabulary portions of these tests and help prepare you for taking the test itself. Study Skills

I ranked number one in my high school class for four straight years at one of the top college prepartory schools in the Upper Midwest. I earned a 3.72 GPA at Harvard in one of the most competitive departments there and have consistently scored exceptionally well on all types of exams. I can teach you and your children the study skills that I relied on for years.
Effective study skills are a combination of routines and practices one follows each and every time one sits down to do homework at any level, to complete assignments, to write papers or prepare for tests. Following a prescribed routine removes doubt and uncertainty, increases confidence and manifests its benefits immediately in many ways, chief among which is performance. Learning good study skills is paramount if one wishes to improve academic performance.

Trigonometry

I currently tutor Trigonometry on a weekly basis, explaining the various functions, their inverses, properties and identities. I demonstrate to students how to use their calculators, solve problems and recognize the practical applications of the course material. As a former high school "mathlete," I competed in and helped my team win the state math championships four years in a row.

Vocabulary

There is no easy way to learn vocabulary, but there are easier ways and harder ways, effective ways and somewhat pointless undertakings. The main thing is an active approach where students use and force themselves to use new words rather than hope they can passively learn simply by scanning the page. Writing out new words, their parts of speech and definitions, and new sentences using the words to prove mastery remain essential techniques. There are computer programs that can help organize and speed up this process, and we will be using them to improve your facility with new words and your confidence in using them correctly and meaningfully in everyday conversation or academic discourse.

World History

I studied history extensively at Harvard, with a focus on European history, earning a 3.75 GPA and graduating Magna Cum Laude. My senior thesis on "Varieties of Nationalism in 19th Century Europe" won second prize in the highly competitive History and Literature Department. I can teach you the best reading and note-taking techniques, best methods for researching and writing papers, and how to think like an historian.

Writing

My favorite tutoring subject is writing. Whether you want assistance with your own writing or are looking for someone to improve upon professional communications or business correspondence, I am happy to lend my expertise. Whether you want a writing coach to bring out the best in you or someone to make your documents impress, you will be happy with my results.
