I am a political-economist by training and vocation. I have a PhD in Economics (lots of math required) and was a double major in Math and Econ, as an undergrad. I am good at math and easy to get along with. I taught at the college level but am currently employed full-time during the day as a Minnesota Math Corps tutor, helping 4-5th graders reach their grade-level competency in Mathematics.
I've tutored extensively in mathematics, statistics and economics. I did very well on the GRE (It is how I got a distinguished fellowship in Grad School.) and SAT Math/Verbal (It is how I became a national merit scholar semifinalist.). I'm interested in tutoring, as I also was tutored in writing while working on my dissertation in graduate school and so I know what it's like to be on the other side of the fence.
I am an extrovert and pretty empathic. I come from a family of teachers and like to help people learn and care about my students. When tutoring for math subjects, I am good at adapting to the needs of the student, as we uncover the concepts and work on problems. I like to try to sketch out a bigger picture for a student of why a subject matters to motivate them to put some extra effort into their studies.
As a result, I tend to work best with students who are motivated to learn and are willing to go beyond just what matters for their current classwork. I know how to set a reasonable pace for tutoring and benefit from ongoing feed-back.
I like to watch movies, spend time with internationals, travel, read heady nonfiction, hang with friends, play cards, do Yoga, meditate and hike.
I have a background in tutoring mathematics and finance. I also have passed the first two actuarial exams. I have a shorter learning curve in learning complicated mathematical problems, which makes me a great study partner, even in areas that I have not studied or used as of late!
I took two years of Algebra in one year when I was 13. I did very well in it and have tutored folks in it many times since then. I think part of what helps me is that I value others learning the material that I tutor in. So even if it's not as "hard" as some of the stuff I had to learn, it's meaningful and a good thing for others to learn.

I took two quarters of college-level Calculus in 11th grade at the University of Talented Youth Math Program. It was a hard program but it prepared me well to start as a Math major the next year. I've tutored a lot of students in Calculus and used Calculus a lot in my studies and teaching of Economics. One of my favorite jobs I got through WyzAnt was helping a talented mechanical engineer review the second year of Calculus in preparation for starting a PhD program.
I was a Math major in college and got an A in Differential Equations. We had a retired Engineering/Physics professor teaching the class, because the professor who would normally teach it was on sabbatical. Our professor was a nice man, but he was used to dealing with 800-level material and only came down to a 600-level for a 200-level class. And so I got to tutor the math education majors in differential equations, as I was taking the class.

I took discrete mathematics while I was an undergraduate mathematics major. I used it while I was analyzing data sets in graduate school and other contexts.
I have a PhD in Economics. I did my field exam at the end of my 2nd year in Econometrics and passed on the first attempt, unlike most of the other graduate students at Michigan State University at the time.

I work with them on whatever book they bring, using a variety of techniques for test taking. I am good at teaching simple tricks that make it easier to do calculations or to check one's work.
My greatest weakness as a tutor is that sometimes my students have gotten so much better after one session, they have no longer needed any assistance ;-<
I did very well in the GRE, passing over 90% in all three categories. I also took some GRE preps then and benefited from them. I have since then helped a lot of students prepare for the GRE, SAT or other courses with a strong math component.
I took my first course in Linear Algebra when I was seventeen. I did very well in it, as well as the more advanced class that I took in Graduate School. Linear Algebra was very important for harder classes in Statistics and multivariable Calculus and many of the graduate courses in Economics. But it is the natural language for modelling complex sets of linear interactions in a wide variety of fields and I enjoy learning and teaching about its creative applications in many fields.
My depth of understanding of Linear Algebra helps me to be more focused on being attentive and responsive to my student's needs and frustrations. It's been a little while since I first studied the material and it is easier for me to relate with people who struggle with it. My years of tutoring also help me to work with my students from where they are at and to know when a brief brain-break with the help of some humor might be needed.
A lot of people struggle with pre-algebra because they have not yet truly grasped 6th grade level mathematics. This comes easily with time and effort and also some maturity and assistance from a tutor can speed things up.
I took PreCalc when I was in 9th grade. It's like a big puzzle. Most people don't need to know it, but it does show others their ability and willingness to learn how to learn and it opens a lot of doors for folks. It also reinforces the need to learn Mathematics concepts for the long-term, not just the short-term, since it builds on the earlier Algebra and Geometry classes they took. I enjoy helping HS students to learn it.
I first began tutoring in statistics when I was 17, the semester after I took a junior-level course in Statistics from my father who has a PhD in Mathematical Statistics. It was a really good experience. I learned to be patient and encouraging to my students and to enjoy it when they learn the material well.
I still enjoy it when a student gets the material and sees its usefulness, although I understand that typically its crucial to pass the class.
