Hello. My name is Lindsey, and I have been an ESL teacher and tutor since I was in high school. I've been reading since I was very little, and I have always loved figuring out how English can be used, and studying the grammar of the language. In college, I decided to study linguistics and Latin, through which I learned a lot about how grammar and syntax works in English as well as in other languages.
I received my TEFL Certification from Hamline University, and have been working with the Minnesota Literacy Council for the past year. My teaching style is all about the student: addressing what you need to know, why you need to know it, and making sure that you actually can use the grammar and vocabulary you learn in the lesson. I use textbooks, music, videos, real materials like novels and newspapers, and other items you run into on a regular basis, as well as trying to make use of as many language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) as I can throughout the lessons, to make sure my students truly understand all aspects of what they are learning.
I have experience teaching adults and children of all ages, levels, and backgrounds, from Korean students in a school setting, to English-speaking European students working on thesis papers, to recent immigrants to the US learning to read and speak English for the first time. I enjoy all aspects of both the language and the learning process, and I really appreciate seeing my students grow more confidant in their language study and use!
I have been an adult ESL tutor and teacher for six years, working with private students as well as classes across a range of ages, backgrounds, and levels of English and literacy. I am TEFL certified.
In high school, I peer-tutored the grammar and writing class, in addition to tutoring other students in writing for college. I studied a number of languages, and have tutored both English and Latin grammar on a business and academic level for six years.
I have been proofreading essays, papers, theses, applications, and manuals for students, small companies, and non-profits for many years. I am particularly practiced in editing and proofreading for those for whom English is not a native language.
I have taught basic reading skills including pronunciation and sight-reading for the Minnesota Literacy Council in Minnesota as well as Chungdahm Academy in Seoul, South Korea. In addition, I taught test taking skills for college and high school applications (for non-native speakers). My favorite thing to teach, however, is reading for study. I taught classes in note-taking, annotation, and how to use word and context clues to analyze a text and find important information.
In my year working with the Minnesota Literacy Council and my time teaching in Seoul, South Korea, I taught a lot of vocabulary. In Korea, I taught set vocabulary lists, aiding the students in both remembering meanings and spellings and also learning skills for recognizing word parts and roots to find meaning in new words with and without the aid of a dictionary.
Finally, with the Literacy Council, I chose vocabulary for each lesson, based on student needs and lesson topics, and designed activities to ensure students learned how to use the words, not just what the words meant.
In my year with the Minnesota Literacy Council, I helped non-literate students learn how to form letters and words, then sentences and paragraphs. I taught application, resume, and letter formats, and aided students in writing their own. I have also worked with college students writing theses, to help with academic wording and format.
In Korea, I taught basic essay writing skills, including form, style, register, grammar, and word choice for both personal and academic essays, among other skills.
