I am a contributing writer for Senior Perspective magazine and work as a substitute paraprofessional in the Melrose and New London-Spicer schools. I graduated with a degree in Philosophy from St. Cloud State University, have a background in as a public speaker and in theatre, and have served on the Great River Regional Library Board. I have experience in both working with students with special needs and in tutoring logic at the university level.

Also, I have enjoyed helping coach little league and community sports and have taught the basics of percussion (snare drum and bongo)through continuing education programs. I enjoy working with children on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. My approach differs with the needs, aptitudes, and abilities of each student. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

I have an extensive background in percussion including playing for the Harding High School Concert and Jazz bands, the Greater Twin Cities Orchestra, and the St. Paul Youth Symphony. I continued playing in college; playing with the Brandon University Band and Orchestra. Also, I have taught percussion both privately and through Continuing Education as a summer program with the Melrose schools.

Elementary (K-6th)

I work as a substitute paraprofessional for 'Teachers on Call' and directly for the Melrose school district working with children from 1st grade through high school. Some of these children have special needs but others are just in need of a little guidance and help to stay up with their classmates. Also, I have helped my own four children with their studies (my youngest is now in fifth grade), and as they were advanced students I have had the experience of working with high achievers as well. I also have been active helping coach elementary students in several sports for children from ages 5-13.

Logic

I was a philosophy major at Brandon University where I became a tutor in logic at my professors request. Also, I studied the symbolic logic of Frege as an independent subject at the University of Minnesota. Furthermore, I went back to school at St. Cloud State University several years ago where I made the dean's list all four semesters and received no grade lower than an A in any philosophy subject. I graduated with a major in philosophy and a 3.92 GPA.

Public Speaking

I have spoken to large groups on a number of occasions, having addressed audiences in order to raise funds for a nurse from the U.K. who for many years provided health services in the Kalash Valleys in NW Pakistan. Also, in my five years as a board trustee and personnel chair for the Great River Regional Library System, I have made many public statements on matters before the board. Furthermore, I have performed in local theatre. I took speech at St. Cloud State University as part of my philosophy degree, and have given many class presentations there and at Brandon University in Canada, where as an extra credit assignment, I lectured to two classes for two class periods each on American political history.

Religion

I have a background in Philosophy including a philosophy of Religion course which earned me an award for highest marks for a 1st year philosophy student at Brandon University, Canada. I also took several religion courses at Brandon and was asked by one professor if he could use my paper [on Agape love] for future courses. I lead a bible study for those interested in the bible as literature in my dorm room which drew a Religion Professor and viewpoints from many sides. I have extensively traveled through areas in the Hindu Kush and Himalayas to the Sahel desert in Africa, and have made learned much from those I have met in my travels. I have discussed religion at a dinner table that included a Lebanese Christian, a Lebanese Shiite, an Egyptian Sunni, and two Nigerian followers of Maliki. I have stayed in the Kalash Valleys where they follow an indigenous religion dating back to the time of Alexander, and have dined with a farsi scholar in Karachi. I have read numerous works on religion including Joseph Campbells "Man and Myth" and have studied theology, both as a philosophy student and in my own reading. I have also studied world music, which has many correlations to the religious frameworks within the various cultures studied.

Special Needs

I am a paraprofessional working for 'Teachers on Call' in the New London-Spicer School district, and directly for the Melrose school district. I have worked in all grades from elementary from high school, working with students with developmental challenges, to those with behavioral disorders, to students with autism. I also worked for Joanne Broady with Dakota County Services, where I worked with adults with developmental disorders.

Tax Preparation

I have worked the past three years as a tax preparer for Liberty Tax in Willmar and have always done my own joint return before that by pencil and paper, which included self employment, business and auto expenses, child care credit, EIC, and Minnesota education expenses.
