I am a certified Genetic Counselor trained in advanced human genetics and psychosocial counseling. As a genetic counselor, I take complex ideas and pieces of information and translate them into concepts that my patients can understand and use to make informed decisions about themselves and their families. I believe in finding out from patients and students how they best take in information and what their primary interests are to use as a launching pad to teach them about a difficult or new subject. Comparisons to real world objects and activities I have found to be extremely helpful in helping people learn more about genetics - human and otherwise - and biology.
I have a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from the University of MN, Twin Cities, and a BA cum laude from St. Olaf College in Biology and Ecology. I have taught Biology and Genetics labs at UMN, Twin Cities. I worked as a genetics and biology tutor for two years during graduate school. I have worked as a research scientist for the Human Genome Project and the Genomic Sciences Department at UW-Seattle, Washington.
Compassion, humor and patience - I use these to help people use their own intelligence to learn. I am very approachable and committed to helping others.
