I graduated from Protestant Reformed Christian grade school and Heritage Christian High School in IL, both small private schools. I always performed well in math, and especially enjoy algebra. On national exams like the Iowa Basics in grade school and ACT in high school, my math score was in the 90th percentile range.

As far as tutoring your child/student, I plan to be fun, patient, and disciplined. I am lighthearted but get the job done. I anticipate letting the student learn his or her way, and adapt to their learning skills and do what's best for them.

One of my objectives will be to help my student not only get the right answer (of course!), but understand the steps that led to that answer. Just giving the answer away is not my style. This can be challenging at times, but I believe it is important to know how to get the answer, not just what the answer is (and not knowing how you got it). I understand the frustrations that come from learning and how hopelessly far away the answer may seem at times. My goal is to prevent this feeling by working at the student's pace and making them feel comfortable enough to ask me a question at any time. A working relationship is important to me, not just having all the answers, but being able to share them with my students. I look forward to tutoring and know it will be a learning experience just as much for me as it is for them.

Algebra 1

solving equations is my specialty

Algebra 2

I take pleasure out of finding 'x' and am determined to hunt it down. I always enjoyed solving equations and always try to make learning fun for my students. I always did well in math, especially algebra. I just have a natural ability in this area and would love to help out anyone who is struggling.

Basketball

I played basketball at Protestant Reformed Grade School from grades 6-8 and at Heritage Christian High School for 4 years as a point guard. I have grown since then and am now learning the inside game, but one thing that has always stayed with me is my shot. I am also a hustle player. If you work with me, I can show you how to shoot the ball properly and consistently. Free throws are a great way to work on your shot and improve consistency. I can teach you to help find your rhythm and focus so that you become more confident in your shot. We can start up close and work our way out, maybe challenge each other in a game of around the world.
With my point guard background, I can also help you improve your dribbles. Left hand, right hand, back and forth, forward, reverse...all kinds of ways to dribble the ball. My drills will help you practice all these until you are comfortable around any defender.
As a hustle player, I especially enjoy rebounds. The shot goes up, you find your guy, and box him out. It sounds simple, but you gotta fight for it. I will show you proper positioning and mental approach that will allow you to gain an edge in beating your opponent to the ball. Get your teammates extra possessions and they will reward you.
I can teach defensive stance, but this may be hard to implement in a one-on-one setting. Maybe a game of one-on-one?
I just love to play the game. Let's have fun and maybe learn a thing or two. You in?

Chess

I have played this game for many years. It started when I was young and challenged my dad all the time. He always beat me (and still sometimes does), but the tables have turned since then and I win pretty consistently now. I will challenge you with sneaky moves so you better be on your guard. But I will also teach you how to play it safely and to be smart while maintaining your attack. If you are just learning the game and the pieces, I can very easily and patiently walk you through it. This game takes time. It is slow paced and will require more than one sit down to grasp the whole concept. After several attempts though your concentration will be rewarded and you will start to understand. With me, you can go as slow or fast as you want and I think that is why students enjoy working with me. I can 'dumb it down' and work at their pace without making them feel dumb, but instead make it fun. And if you are a quick thinker, I will match it and challenge you to improve.
