I have tutored math off and on for 35 years, usually at the high-school algebra level. My background is in applied physics (bachelor's degree), electrical engineering, and nuclear physics (master's degree), with a lot of additional coursework in astrophysics and engineering math. As a tutor, I realize that there are a number of reasons why a student may not understand a particular concept - a textbook that leaves out details, an instructor who goes through a subject too fast, a weakness in some prerequisite area, distractions in the classroom, etc. - and it's my job to present a subject in a way that causes the light bulb to come on.
