My name is Jennifer and I am passionate not only about teaching, but the tutoring experience! I have been a tutor since 2003 (over ten years and thousands of hours of experience) working with families of students ranging between preschool to adult in age. I have helped dozens of students in the following subject areas: math, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, science, history, study skills, Spanish, prealgebra, and algebra to name a few. I have a teaching degree from Oakland University and I taught middle school science for three years before becoming a professional tutor. I do speak Spanish (limited - and studied it for six years.)
Not only do I teach at night, but I homeschool my own children during the day. I am patient, kind, and committed to the students and families I work with in improving their educational skills. I believe every child/adult has the ability to learn. With patient and caring instruction, a desire from the student to want to improve, and support from their family, he/she can accomplish their academic goals. I believe in the tutoring experience, that sometimes, all it takes is to have a tutor work with the student and fit the missing pieces of understanding back into place. I have had much success over the years and I look forward to being the jigsaw piece that helps complete your student's academic portrait!
There is a growing need to teach students leadership skills. Everyone is called to lead in some capacity as he/she matures and learns through the lessons of life. Having the right information can lead the way toward opportunity and success in every aspect of a student's life. Blending a solid academic foundation with the life skills supported by leadership principles, will give your student the posture, confidence, and preparedness to enter life's journey after high school. It is never too early to begin teaching life changing principles. Give your student the extra edge and inquire of ways leadership skills can be added to your student's academic experience. Academic:

Jennifer has been working with my daughter for a couple of months and I am very pleased with the results. My daughter has ADD and has struggled in science all year. Jennifer has helped her improve her grade and has been more than willing to do whatever will help my daughter succeed. She even met with my daughter's science teacher. I can't say enough nice things about Jennifer. She is a blessing. I only wish I would have found her sooner!
Jennifer has been extremely patient and thorough with my daughter. She is thorough and is teaching methods that will continue to be helpful with future lessons.
Jennifer has been such a blessing to my daughter! She is an excellent tutor as well as person. We are so thrilled to have her as part of our team in educating and developing our daughter.
Jennifer has been a wonderful tutor for our daughter. She is very reliable and very sensitive to our needs. Our daughter has made significant progress since she has been tutored by Jennifer. Jennifer is a great communicator and promptly informs us about changes in time or dates.
I found Mrs. Jennifer last spring while my daughter was preparing for a comprehensive Math Test. With Jennifer’s help my daughter was able to pass the arduous exam for acceptance to a selective high school! Jennifer even went to the school with me to look at previous exams; by doing this Jennifer was able to see the specific areas of math that would be on the exam. My daughter likes Jennifer so much we have continued to use her through the summer. She is doing a wonderful job helping my daughter with her Math skills, and overall academic skills. She is also very reliable and flexible in her scheduling of sessions. My wife and I are very happy that we found Jennifer. Jennifer is an excellent educator!
I found Jennifer S. through Wyzant.com in a search to help my son with studying for the ASVAB. My son has ADHD and learning disabilities in reading and comprehension. A steep task for anyone to take on. I was impressed with Jennifer's eagerness and willingness to assist my son. She never seemed overwhelmed at undertaking the task of helping him get ready for his ASVAB exam. She was very diligent in finding a tutoring time that worked well with my son's schedule. During the first two weeks of tutoring, she was able to teach my son ways of reading and getting to the answers correctly, in a way he's never learned during his school career. He is a senior in high school right now. When he came to Jennifer, he had taken a "practice" test for the ASVAB and scored very low. After 10 tutoring sessions he took the test again and scored much higher! He will be taking the real test in August. I have no doubt that without Jennifer's help, he would not have raised his score so high. I have also seen an improvement in his grades in school by applying what Jennifer has taught him. I wish I would have found her sooner. My son was always willing to go to tutoring and always said how nice she was, and helpful. He really enjoyed it (or he would have wanted to quit, he's 17!) Also, Jennifer was always great about posting her comments after each session, keeping me informed of the progress they were making. I know Jennifer tutors in many subjects and I can tell you from experience, she is fantastic! If you're in her area and have a child with a specific need, you can't go wrong with hiring her to assist. I can't say thank you enough to her! She truly cares about the success of the student she is teaching, and it shows!
Jennifer has been working with my daughter for several months now. Her grades have improved including Geometry! She also has more confidence in her academic abilities. Jennifer did a good job at determining her needs and defining a plan. Jennifer has established a positive and motivational relationship with her. We look forward to continuing the tutoring experience with Jennifer and highly recommend her to others.
Jennifer has tutored my grandson who has adhd for several weeks. I am very pleased and proud to say that he just passed his test, and I credit this accomplishment to Jennifer's tutoring. My grandson asked if he could continue with his tutoring sessions until he leaves for bootcamp. Of course I said yes. Thank you, a happy grandma.
Jennifer S. was very patient while tutoring my son with algebra. She made sure he understood each problem and also reinforced needed strategies. My son said he liked her as a tutor, and that she cleared some things up that he didn't understand.
I had selected three tutors to try out for my very first tutoring session ever. Jennifer was the first one to respond to my emails and set up a time to meet. From the first day/session I had with her, we clicked and I knew she was going to be my tutor! Jennifer is a wonderful person who wants to make sure you, the student, are understanding your material. I never had a problem trying to contact her, whether it was by phone or by email, she always responded. I have always struggled with math my entire life and have never been able to pull above a C in class. I was horrible on exams, I didn't know how to study and would attempt the homework and then just push it aside when I couldn't figure something out. After the first few meetings with Jennifer, I felt more confident with my homework. The more we met on a regular basis, the more I was able to understand my homework and improve on my test scores. The biggest accomplishment for me was actually passing my math courses with B's!! I was so excited!! Jennifer helped me through 2 semesters of college math for elementary teachers and I hope to be able to use her in the future too. I would highly recommend Jennifer to any of my family, friends or even strangers! I can't thank her enough for helping me...I'm proud to say, I was even able to help my friend the other day with stuff I learned last winter without having to look it up!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a former member of the Air Force National Guard, I have military experience that compliments my teaching skills in preparing students for the ASVAB. Like many of my young adult students, I experienced their same road in preparing for the military as a career. My journey began as a senior in high school, where I took the ASVAB as a way to prepare for many options for my future. Once passing the exam, I saw the military as an exciting experience that would give me many quality life skills upon entering adulthood.
While being committed to my military service, I continued my education as a full-time student in becoming a teacher. As I learned in the classroom to enrich and teach others, I was also learning from my officers and sergeants, training me to protect, honor, and respect my fellow service men and women and the civilians I encountered on a daily basis at work and school. Through the years as a teacher, I have taught many of the fundamentals listed on the ASVAB. I have been fortunate to be both a teacher and a military member and because of these two experiences, I have gained a wonderfully unique background that assists me in preparing others who choose the same enriching career path in entering the armed forces.
I received my degree in Elementary Education (K-8). My field experience during my education concentrated in grades 1st-4th. I have been a tutor for over ten years and have worked with dozens of children between grades K-6. I have worked in all core subject areas: reading, writing, math, science, history, language arts, spelling, grammar, and study skills. I currently homeschool my 7th grader, 3rd grader, and preschooler. I am very familiar with the concepts in each subject area. My passion is teaching students ranging in grades K-8. I have thousands of hours in tutoring students and have had much success in bringing understanding to the elementary mind. I am pleasant, kind, and caring. I work to build the confidence of my students during this tender age through a successful learning experience.
I have taught phonics and reading to dozens of students since becoming a tutor in 2003. I have a teaching degree in elementary education from Oakland University. I believe in starting at the beginning, especially with phonics: teaching letter/sound recognition, blends, digraphs, trigraphs, as examples. I stress sight word recognition as awareness of specific sounds are taught and repeated. I believe phonics is very important in the primary grades and affects a student's reading ability in upper elementary, middle school, and even high school if these basics are not mastered early on in a student's education. I have great patience and gentle correction to build up a student's confidence in his/her reading ability. I homeschool my 7th grader and 3rd grader, and have taught them to read past their grade levels. My preschooler likes to read and is able to recognize some sight words at this tender age. I enjoy teaching phonics and I believe it is the cornerstone in a successful learning experience. It is the key to understanding language, communicating with others, and affects all other subject areas. It is the very essence of understanding and can give every opportunity in the world to a student if mastered.
Before WyzAnt, I had been a tutor for another in-home tutoring company that taught a specific, well-written, and organized study skills course. As a tutor, I used this experience to teach students skills that would help them: organize their time and materials, set a plan for previewing and reviewing course materials, understand short-term/long-term memory and fear of test taking, and memory devices that would aid in information recall. I have taught study skills on numerous occasions to students who see the importance of planning their educational goals and I have helped many students lay out a plan of action to guide them. I believe study skills is the edge that gives a person the advantage to succeed without limit. Study skills can reteach a person's behavioral approach to studying. Without a good study habit, opportunity will pass by without even knowing it. It's the difference between a good student and an outstanding self-learner.
