I recently graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in chemistry and a M.S. in biochemistry. I was a teaching assistant for the general chemistry undergraduate courses at MSU for 2 years and I have hundreds of hours of one on one tutoring experience. As a tutor, I strive to motivate students by sharing my enthusiasm and excitement for the sciences. My goal is to make learning enjoyable and to provide a positive learning experience by showing patience and encouragement.

I can tutor both high school and college students in the subjects of mathematics (up to calculus), physical science, chemistry, biology, physics, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biochemistry

I received a Master of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from MSU. My thesis was titled "Experimental and Theoretical Studies of the Mitochondrial Replisome." My research advisor was Dr Laurie S. Kaguni and my research focused on two enzymes involved in mitochondrial DNA replication: the mitochondrial DNA polymerase Pol gamma, and the mitochondrial DNA helicase, nicknamed TWINKLE. Hundreds of human disease mutations affect these two enzymes and cause various mitochondrial disorders such as progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO) and a severe infantile onset disorder called Alpers syndrome which usually results in death at an early age. The goal of my project was to characterize the biochemical defects of these mutations and predict the severity of disease of new mutations. I also investigated the biochemical and physical properties of the mitochondrial DNA helicase to advance our knowledge of its function(s) within living cells.

Through this work I have co-first authored one research article in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology.

Calculus

My educational background in mathematics includes Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. I earned a 3.5/4.0 GPA in all of these courses at MSU.

Chemistry

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and I graduated with a 3.51/4.0 science GPA. I have taught undergraduate general chemistry as a teaching assistant for 2 years and have hundreds of hours of one on one tutoring experience.

As an undergraduate at MSU, I worked for Dr Robert L. LaDuca as an undergraduate researcher for 3 years. Our research involved the synthesis of metal-organic coordination polymers and the characterization of their molecular structure and physical properties. Through this work, I have had the opportunity to co-author 22 research articles in peer-reviewed journals in the field of inorganic chemistry.

Additionally, Dr LaDuca and I received a national award for this work- the 2012 American Chemical Society Division of Inorganic Chemistry Award for Undergraduate Research. The award recognizes the collaborative research of an outstanding North American undergraduate student and his preceptor in the field of inorganic chemistry.

Differential Equations

My educational background in mathematics includes Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. I earned a 3.5/4.0 in each of these courses at MSU.

Through my undergraduate physical chemistry courses, I am experienced in the application of differential equations to thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. I averaged a 3.5/4.0 in these calc-based physical chemistry courses.

Microbiology

Although my major was chemistry as an undergraduate at MSU, my interest in biology drove me to take seven additional courses (19 credits) from the microbiology department. My areas of expertise include eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell biology, microbial genetics, immunology and the molecular pathogenesis of bacterial and viral pathogens.

Organic Chemistry

I received a 4.0/4.0 in both Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II and a 3.5/4.0 in both Organic Chemistry Lab I and Organic Chemistry Lab II at MSU. I have additional experience in organic synthesis from my undergraduate research, during which I synthesized various dipyridyl ligands containing diverse functional groups and stereochemistries.

As a biochemistry graduate student, I also took a course that studied the organic chemistry of enzyme catalyzed reactions.

Gregory is a great tutor! — Gregory is prepared, well organized, patient and extremely knowledgeable. It is clear to me he should be solving how to cure cancer, diabetes and brain injuries. I am not sure how many people he tutors; however, he is a tutor I trust with helping my daughter understand Physics. I recommend others who need help to use Greg. Gregory continues to amaze me. I had the opportunity to watch his tutori ...
