I know that prospective students in need of tutors are usually interested in boosting exam scores and/or school grades. Of course that is worthwhile and important, however I am more interested in the students understanding the material. First of all, the material- the subject matter of the sciences is seriously the most incredible and interesting stuff you (or your child) might ever study. So teaching to the tests, and not going the extra yard to work towards understanding is a terrible waste, and besides, a decent understanding of something, as opposed to memorization, leads to real retention of the material, and the improved grades and exam scores follow. Additionally, the way I try and tutor facilitates critical thinking which can benefit students no matter what their educational and life's path and goals. I have a PhD and did my thesis work studying the molecular mechanisms of learning and memory. I have four kids of my own, and often do outreach as a guest science speaker in their schools, which is awesome. I have a solid foundation in math, biology, chemistry, physics, and physiology with an emphasis in neurobiology. I love the process of teaching and learning, and would look forward to tutoring you if you are the student, or your child if you are the parent.
I wanted to start out tutoring things more outside of my direct area of expertise, because I wanted the challenge of learning to teach. This is more difficult and required effort for me to think about and teach things I haven't thought about academically for awhile. Genetics, however, is directly related to my area of expertise, as I use mouse genetics to understand molecular mechanisms. I create mutations in mouse embryonic stem cells and use these cells to derive mutant animals for study.
I have my PhD in molecular pharmacology, and have taught both medical students (MD) and pharmacy students (PharmD) at the University of Washington in Seattle. I have done research creating mutant mice where the mutations physically create drug binding pockets in specific proteins.
