I know that prospective students in need of tutors are usually interested in boosting exam scores and/or school grades. Of course that is worthwhile and important, however I am more interested in the students understanding the material. First of all, the material- the subject matter of the sciences is seriously the most incredible and interesting stuff you (or your child) might ever study. So teaching to the tests, and not going the extra yard to work towards understanding is a terrible waste, and besides, a decent understanding of something, as opposed to memorization, leads to real retention of the material, and the improved grades and exam scores follow. Additionally, the way I try and tutor facilitates critical thinking which can benefit students no matter what their educational and life's path and goals. I have a PhD and did my thesis work studying the molecular mechanisms of learning and memory. I have four kids of my own, and often do outreach as a guest science speaker in their schools, which is awesome. I have a solid foundation in math, biology, chemistry, physics, and physiology with an emphasis in neurobiology. I love the process of teaching and learning, and would look forward to tutoring you if you are the student, or your child if you are the parent. Mike definitely knows chemistry. He could easily lecture for the entire hour and provide in depth explanations. He always made sure that my son had a grasp of what was being taught. We would use him again without hesitation.
I have met with Mike a handful of times and every time has been extremely helpful and beneficial to my grade. I honestly don't have any negative feedback whatsoever, he's very easy to reach and is always punctual and very helpful. My grades improved in both math and physics after just a couple sessions. Overall I would recommend him to everyone!
We have been working with Mike to help our daughter with Algebra. He is a great tutor and her confidence has skyrocketed in this course because of their work. I would highly recommend Mike to anyone who needs tutoring. Mike is patient and very knowledgeable- two things that are great for teenage students.
Amazing tutor. I was blown away at the knowledge he had over the subject. Really broke down the articles down for me. I will definitely use him in the future. I highly recommend!
Words can't even say what a help he was to my son. He built up his confidence and made chemistry not as dreaded.
Excellent tutor for my daughter! Makes chemistry not boring and she is excited about the knowledge she has obtained in this area and has confidence that She didn't have before in chemistry! Excellent!
Mike has been working with both my daughter (17) and son (14) this school year. His absolute awesome understanding of Chemistry and Algebra has helped them immensely. He works very hard at trying to get them to truly UNDERSTAND what they are doing and learning. I think this approach has been invaluable for them to truly understand the material. We will continue to use Mike as a tutor for as long as they are in school and he is available! Honestly - couldn't recommend him more!
Mike is very patient and enthusiastic. He really understands the adolescent animal and is a quick read on how to relate. He really knows his stuff and we feel lucky to have him. Lessons are never a chore when Mike is here. He is also really flexible with schedules.
Mike is a great tutor. I highly recommend him. He not only has a great deal of knowledge in the field, but he can also teach the topics at the pace that meets this student's need.
He has the ability to sit down and explain even the most complex concepts in a way I can understand. He takes his time and we keep going over something until I understand it. That is great. He always comes prepared with notes for me to take home and review again while I am studying on my own and I find that very helpful. I am really lucky to have somebody with the ability to explain physiology in a way that I can understand it. He is very good at what he does!
Mike was a great find. When we first signed up with Mike, he came to our house to meet us and to talk about how he tutors to ensure his approach was what we were looking for. My son gains confidence working with him and his grade in math has improved in the short time they have worked together. Mike's follow up reports are thorough and received the day of the session. Anyone looking for a patient tutor who knows his stuff will not be disappointed in Mike's sessions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I wanted to start out tutoring things more outside of my direct area of expertise, because I wanted the challenge of learning to teach. This is more difficult and required effort for me to think about and teach things I haven't thought about academically for awhile. Genetics, however, is directly related to my area of expertise, as I use mouse genetics to understand molecular mechanisms. I create mutations in mouse embryonic stem cells and use these cells to derive mutant animals for study.
I have my PhD in molecular pharmacology, and have taught both medical students (MD) and pharmacy students (PharmD) at the University of Washington in Seattle. I have done research creating mutant mice where the mutations physically create drug binding pockets in specific proteins.
