If either you or your child is having difficulty with Chinese, would like to get a head start on learning, or move to the head of the class, I can help. If you as a parent would like to learn more about the language in order to help with homework, I can teach you. If you're preparing to go to China for business or pleasure, I can get you ready. Even if you're just curious, I can help you decide if studying Chinese is right for you.
I offer students the chance to study with someone who has personally experienced all of the difficulties associated with learning Chinese as a foreign language and has developed ways to make it easier. While studying with a native speaker offers advantages for more advanced students, beginning and intermediate students benefit immensely from the guidance of someone who has learned from the same cultural and linguistic perspectives as the student.
I have a BA in Chinese from Wayne State University, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude. It was through studying at Wayne State that I discovered opportunities to study and live in China. I studied Chinese at our sister school, Huazhong University of Science and Technology as part of an exchange program for one semester. The following year, I was awarded a full scholarship for an additional year of intensive Chinese language study. No English was spoken in the classroom, and I was forced to find ways to adapt and learn rapidly. I chose the most difficult classes, and worked my way up from struggling to top scores. Additionally, my experience living and working in China for nearly four years has helped me understand the language as it is spoken in daily life, and afforded me the opportunity to learn the culture, which is an essential aspect of learning the language.
I gained my first four years of teaching experience in China, teaching English at a high school, a university, and a private training institute. This, and the courses I took for my TEFL certificate, has provided the foundation for my teaching method. In the US, I have tutored professionals, college students, and high school students. I am able to efficiently determine the students' needs, their current level, and what it will take to get them to their desired level. My students always show significant improvement within a month, and my goal for every student is that they become self-sufficient in their studies. Accordingly, my lessons focus heavily on principles of language learning. I am a strong advocate of active learning.
If you'd like to take advantage of the opportunity to study with an American who, as an adult, progressed from absolutely zero knowledge of Chinese to fluency in only 3 years, please contact me through WyzAnt.
