I have been a professional musician since 1975, performing in groups and solo on clarinet and piano. I currently am pursuing my Bachelor of Music Education degree. I have also taught private lessons on a variety of instruments and voice over the years including: clarinet, piano, saxophone. I have studied music theory extensively at the college level, and have taught it to my students as it occurs in their music during lessons or with theory textbooks over the years. I am familiar with Western Music History and composers and their various composition techniques from a theoretical viewpoint, applying Solfege and written music to demonstrate intervals, rhythms, harmony and counterpoint.
I utilize word lists from "Why Johnny Can't Read", phonic Bible stories and a multitude of Phonic games to assist students in unlocking the code for English mastery, both reading and writing. English is one of the most complicated languages to learn, and I employ various mnemonics to assist in identifying the irregular spellings.
I have given piano lessons to students 5-50+ for the past 30 years, including my own children. I have mostly used John Thompson methods, but also enjoy using any music the student already owns in order to keep music costs down. I do have an annual recital for students to showcase what they have learned, often performing duets with beginning students in order to keep the stress of solos down. I teach music theory as it occurs in the student's music in order to keep it relevant to where they are in their development. I encourage ear training, composition, and music reading mastery.
I like making real life applications to pre-algebra so that students understand the purpose behind the concepts. Drawing pictures, using mnemonics and trying one thing after another until that light bulb of understanding goes on is my strength!

Spelling is essential to good communication. I like to include a study of etymology of words in order to understand the variations we find in the English language. Drills, games, and mnemonics are my methods for spelling. I have taught spelling in private and public school settings since 1988.

Home-Schooling my eleven children, working on my own Bachelor's degree, completing Massage Therapy training/certification, and assisting students with learning disabilities, elementary to college level, are some examples of my experience in this area.
I love to help students acquire new vocabulary, study lists they are given by their teachers, or to create vocabulary based on their current reading. I use repetition, matching, flashcards and other games, even with 6-12th graders, and they love it!
Vocal music: I was church choir director for 2 years, have had conducting, vocal methods on the college level as part of my Music Education degree which I am working on. I also have experience with private vocal lessons and coaching.
