Why French?

From a young age, I have loved France, the French language, and French culture. I recently graduated with a double major in French and English from Oakland University (OU). I tutored French at OU, spent 9 months studying abroad in Orléans, France, and most recently was an English Language Assistant in Bourges, France, where I spent 7 months teaching English to French high school students.

What makes my tutoring different from others?
Just because somebody speaks a language doesn't mean they know how to teach or explain it. I have a strong understanding of both French and English grammar. Because of this, I can help students see the connection between their native language and their acquired language. It's not just words on paper - there are rules and exceptions to every language, and knowing when, how, and why they work is the key to becoming fluent. Furthermore, I am a strong believer in not simply handing out answers. I work with the student to help him or her realize the answer based on the knowledge he or she already has, or has gained throughout our tutoring sessions. Language is like math - there are formulas and variables. And, like math, learning a language isn't just memorization - it's application.

Why Grammar?

Grammar is my guilty pleasure. My bread and butter. My cup of tea. And my goal is to impart this love of language on to you!

Overall:
I have a Bachelor of Arts in French and English from Oakland University, and a Diplôme Approfondi de Français from the Université d’Orléans in Orléans, France. I have found that studying French has improved my knowledge of English, and vice versa. I am happy to tutor both French and English!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Many community colleges and universities request ACT scores in order to get a better idea of a student from an academic point of view. The ACT English section is all about mastery of one's mother tongue. From vocabulary to grammar to context clues, I'm happy to help you learn to navigate this section with a bit more ease!

English

English is a beautiful language with many subtleties, and my experiences in learning French have taught me to appreciate those subtleties even more! Holding a B.A. in English, I am also a native English speaker with excellent grammar and vocabulary skills, and would be more than happy to help students with their studies in this subject.

ESL/ESOL

My studies in English and French have helped me appreciate the difficulty of learning a new language. My experience teaching English in France has helped me further relate to students and understand how to help them better in their pursuit of the English language.

French

Grammar is so important to the application of an acquired language. But, at the same time, French isn't all about book learning. It's also about knowing how to apply the vocabulary you know to various real-world situations. Along with traditional learning, I enjoy incorporating knowledge of common phrases and expressions not found in the average textbook into tutoring sessions to keep things fun, interesting, and relevant!

Grammar

Grammar is, most simply put, the reason I majored in languages. Grammar is fascinating. Like math, it has formulas and variables. And, like math, there is a difference between memorization and application. Once you know a rule and its exception, the next step is to apply - both in homework and on-the-go - in order to master it.

Literature

Literature is one of the keystones of a B.A. in English. Being able to read, appreciate, analyze, and explain literature is one of the best ways to hone your critical thinking skills. I will be glad to help you in these areas!

Proofreading

Proofreading is an important step in writing process. Checking spelling, word-choice, and sentence structure is vital in order to achieve a perfect product!

Vocabulary

An expanded vocabulary helps to give a writer a greater depth of language from which to choose when writing. Furthermore, a diverse vocabulary makes writing and reading more interesting and intriguing, in general providing a better experience for the reader or writer in either task.

Writing

Writing is perhaps the most powerful form of expression. To put one's thoughts and ideas on paper not only turns the abstract into the concrete, but also give it a form which is more easily distributed. History shows that writing has always been an integral part of changing the world, and writing well is the way to do this. With a B.A. in English, I have experience writing in a variety of styles. I also successfully completed a university-level course in Advanced Critical Writing in order to improve my writing skills. I would be glad to help you with yours!

My first experience tutoring French was at the Oakland University Academic Skills Center (ASC). I was nervous - I had never tutored a foreign language before! In a way, I had to fly by the seat of my pants. I had all the knowledge in my head - the grammar, the tenses, the vocabulary, and how to use it all. The challenge was being prepared to respond to whatever question the student threw at... read more

Great French tutor, very responsive to our tutoring needs — Ashley tutored our daughter intensively for one month to bring her up to speed for a study abroad in France. She was very helpful with a college French class (300 level) by explaining the intricacies of grammar at this level. She went above and beyond the face-to-face meetings by creating worksheets and finding helpful websites for additional practice. She keeps in touch well by texting, email, an ...
