After 16 years of teaching mathematics at Western International High School, certified by the State of Michigan as a "highly qualified teacher", I decided to retire early in order to pursue a variety of interests. However, I have some free time to dedicate to one of my passions: helping students of any age to achieve their targeted level of success.
I possess an extensive teaching experience that allows me to detect those obstacles that keep students from understanding and working with math concepts. I have developed a large array of connections between math concepts and everyday experiences. My most precious reward is the enthusiastic AHA! of a student who visualizes a mathematical idea that was deemed "difficult" before.
My experience as a math tutor working with adults is also an asset worth mentioning. Nowadays, many people want to advance their education by enrolling in college. Then, they find the deficiencies of traditional high school math instruction. I envision it as a meaningful and worthwhile endeavor to help ambitious individuals to advance their careers, or to prepare for new ones.
My competence to teach Spanish was developed as a Spanish corporate instructor and translator for clients such as Guardian Industries, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation. Furthermore, I acquired valuable business experience as a commercial representative for Guardian Industries Corporation in South America.
I am an avid reader and traveler. My language expertise, my awareness of current issues and my communication skills are above average.
I prefer to work at a local public library. For instance, Southfield Public Library is an excellent facility: it offers several private study rooms that are equipped with whiteboards. Public libraries are, in my opinion, the best place for studying. However, I will happily accommodate to my student's preferences.
My goal is to help my students reach excellence. My approach is to do it in a comfortable environment. Learning should be fun!
Tutoring sessions on ACT test preparation are aimed to review, understand and apply basic formulas and computational skills that are needed for successful ACT test taking.
Test taking strategies, tips and techniques are important components of ACT Math tutoring; they will be included as at least 30% of the tutoring program agreed upon between student and tutor.
My approach to ACT test preparation is practice, practice, practice. Test simulations will be used intensively as practicing and evaluation tools.
Tutoring sessions on Algebra 1 are aimed to identify previous knowledge weaknesses that may be hindering the ability to handle the subject at grade level. As students strengthen their background, they will work with the language, concepts and techniques that allow them to approach and solve problems by following specific, logical and clear routines. Special attention will be given to the visualization of practical applications of every subject studied during tutorial sessions. The tutorial program will emphasize on developing learning strategies, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to prepare students to succeed in their classroom, their higher level math classes and their college entrance exams.
Tutoring sessions on Algebra 2 are aimed to identify previous knowledge weaknesses that may be hindering the ability to handle the subject at grade level. As the students strengthen their background, they will work with increasingly complex situations relevant to their academic needs.
Special attention will be given to the visualization of applications of every subject studied during tutorial sessions. The tutorial program will emphasize on developing learning strategies, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to prepare students to succeed in their classroom, their higher level math classes and their college entrance exams.
Students are required to bring a graphing calculator to every tutoring session.
The GED Preparation Tutoring Program will prepare students to successfully take the Math portion of GED test. The students will familiarize with the testing format.
We will discuss test taking strategies, tips and techniques. My approach to GED preparation is practice, practice, practice. Students are required to come prepared to the tutoring sessions by completing reading and homework assigned.
Tutoring sessions on Geometry are aimed to identify previous knowledge weaknesses that may be hindering the ability to handle the subject at grade level. As the students strengthen their background, they will work with their actual academic needs. Special attention will be given to the visualization of practical applications of every subject studied during tutoring sessions. The tutorial program will emphasize on developing drawing skills and the use of inductive, deductive and intuitive reasoning skills.
Tutor will use 3 D models and real objects to illustrate geometric principles, connections and practical applications. Students are required to bring a squared lined notebook, pencil, ruler and a scientific calculator to every tutoring session.
Tutoring sessions in preparation for the GRE will cover a rigorous review of the four basic areas of mathematics: arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.
I use a comprehensive outline of the main concepts needed to succeed at the test and will cover them at the pace allowed by the student's previous knowledge of the subject and her ability to perform basic routines.
I particularly enjoy GRE preparation: it is a test taken by motivated, successful young professionals, who usually have enjoyed their high school and college math.
Prealgebra tutoring sessions will focus on identify and remedy weaknesses on the student's ability to use basic principles of algebra applied to the analysis and representation of proportional and non-proportional linear relationships. Prealgebra students must be able to apply arithmetic operations to situations involving rational numbers as well as use probability and statistics to make predictions. As students advance in the sessions, they will develop a more sophisticated way of dealing with word problems by applying these skills.
Tutoring sessions on SAT test preparation are aimed to review, understand and apply basic reasoning, logic and critical thinking skills that are needed for successful SAT test taking.
Test taking strategies, tips and techniques are important components of SAT Math tutoring; they will be included as at least 30% of the tutoring program agreed upon between student and tutor.
My approach to Sat test preparation is practice, practice, practice. Test simulations will be used intensively as practicing and evaluation tools.
Tutoring sessions on Spanish are aimed to satisfy specific student's needs. For instance, basic high school Spanish expects from students to perform the most basic functions of the language and become familiar with some elements of Spanish culture. Advanced high school and college Spanish students are expected to become proficient in listening, speaking, reading and writing; as well as develop an understanding of the customs, arts, literature, history and geography associated with the Spanish language.
For corporate students, Spanish tutoring will focus on enhancing their ability to function effectively in an increasingly important commercial language. Tutoring sessions will provide students a basic foundation in the vocabulary, grammar and conversation, focused on the specific needs of the company or individual. Sessions are available on diverse business areas, such as management, banking, equipment, marketing and trade. Tutoring sessions also will develop their geographic literacy, current issues and cultural understanding of the Spanish-speaking world, as these are key to being able to conduct business successfully. These sessions will be conducted primarily in Spanish and will also include some cross-cultural communication skills frequently used in the world of business and of particular importance for executives who must make informed decisions.
Very Personable and Excellent Approach — I was looking for a tutor who knew both Algebra and Spanish and Roberto is very experienced in both. He is a retired educator and his background was impeccable. My son was hesitant and embarrassed to be tutored and even fought me to go. After one lesson with Roberto, he admitted to me that he really liked the work and was beginning to learn. Roberto quickly assesses needs and his approach is v ...
