Hello and thank you for checking out my profile! I am a certified English teacher who has taught nearly every high school English and writing class under the sun: World Literature & American Literature (both regular and honors), AP Language & Composition, ENG 101 & 102 (Dual Enrollment), and Journalism. I also have a master's degree in English Education with 18 credits of English literature. About five years ago, a few of my former students approached me about tutoring them for their upcoming ACT and SAT tests. I agreed and began putting together a curriculum that I thought might benefit them. It was the first time I had been able to teach students one-on-one and I loved it! After tutoring these students for a few months, they began seeing real results in the form of higher test scores. They, in turn, told their friends about our after-school and weekend tutoring sessions, and before I knew it, I was a busy tutor!
My favorite part about tutoring is the one-on-one interaction. That's something that students just unfortunately do not get in the classroom. Unless they're brave enough to ask questions or approach their teachers after class, they often remain confused and even insecure about their performance. With tutoring, it's so different. Students feel comfortable enough to ask questions, and as a tutor, there's no need for me to rush through lesson plans. We work on concepts until students "get it." Even then, we practice. My goal is for students to walk into the testing room and say, "I've got this" before the test even begins.
One of the biggest factors with the SAT, ACT and AP exams is test STRATEGY. In addition to building students' vocabulary, reading comprehension levels, and grammar skills, we work on skipping and guessing strategies, text-marking strategies, and timing issues. I can also assist with college essays. I can't write them for students; however, I can help with brainstorming, outlining, editing, and revision.
English test prep really goes beyond the tests themselves; most of my "tutorees" have told me that our tutoring sessions have made a huge difference in their classroom performance. I've also had many students tell me that tutoring with me helped them gain valuable skills for college that they would have been lost without. I look forward to working with you! Currently, I am only taking students for summer slots. The summer is a great time to tutor, since you aren't bogged down with homework and other responsibilities. Please message me if you are interested in summer tutoring!
