I've spent the last two school years teaching high school math with the Peace Corps in the French speaking African country of Burkina Faso.
I lived without electricity or running water for over two years!
My math classes had each over 100 students, and I had to manage my classroom in a language other than my own. Adaptability, patience, and compassion were developed in me each day in my effort to develop in my students the skills and character necessary to succeed, both inside the classroom and out.
I graduated in 2010 from Taylor University with a B.S. in psychology and a minor in mathematics. Currently, I am turning my math minor into a math major at Cornerstone University. In May 2013, I will be seeking my teaching certification with the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship at Grand Valley State University. I look forward to having my own high school math classroom again in the fall of 2014.
While teaching to a classroom of one hundred students, I could only imagine what could be accomplished if I were able to give each of my pupils the individual attention they deserved. It is this appreciation for the benefits of individual instruction that has drawn me to tutoring until I once again have a classroom of my own.
Since returning stateside, I have tutored math, French, and study skills. Additionally, my ACT students have consistently seen significant improvements. Previous clients have complemented my patience, general friendliness, communication, competence, and teaching ability.
I am always thinking about how to best utilize every minute I have with my students. I prepare myself with structured lessons adapted to the student's needs. I encourage my students to review material before our sessions and point them to videos or other websites that reinforce what we discussed during the session. I also am always looking for opportunities to incorporate critical thinking skills, test taking strategies, and study skills that will stay with the students long after my time with them ends.
I am new to Wyzant, but references can be provided upon request.
