From my third year of high school until I graduated college in 2009, I was a tutor for various subjects such as middle school math and reading, algebra, advanced algebra, geometry, high school and college biology, organic chemistry, and psychology. I was also a supplemental instructor (an SI Leader) for organic chemistry 1 and psychology. Essentially, I was a group tutor (10+ students at a time) that helped students consolidate information after lecture. I am particularly comfortable tutoring students in their first two years of medical school as I am in my fourth year of medical school.
I believe the best way to "teach" a student is using the Socratic method. When students are posed with a fact in question form, I find that students unknowingly work harder. I believe this is more effective opposed to monotonous lecturing. As well, I put my efforts into helping students truly understand the material. Why? Over the years I have noticed that most of my students are quite intelligent, but struggle with certain concepts. If I can adequately explain those concepts, they will be able to apply that knowledge without my help.
