I'm an experienced history instructor who taught Western Humanities/Civilization part-time for Davenport University for several years. I also have an expired (but potentially renewable) teaching certificate from the State of Michigan in secondary education. My teaching major was history, and my minors were economics and business administration. Years ago, I found that I was one geography class short of general social studies certification. I have B.A.s in philosophy and accounting as well. Furthermore, I have done a lot of reading and writing in my spare time as well. I've had published in daily newspapers a number of letters to the editor over the years. In addition, I've written two books, if I count my M.A. thesis as one of them. So I can teach English composition, accounting, and U.S. government as well, not just history and economics.

Over the years, I also learned a good amount of math. I successfully completed calculus classes in my freshman year of college. In my second year, I took successfully a calculus-based physics class. For the GRE, I got scores of 750 on the verbal section, 680 for the quantitative, and 620 for the analytical. For the subject test in history, I got a 690. As for the SAT, I got a 660 on the verbal section, and a 540 for the math section. This rather balanced profile helps to show I can tutor in algebra and pre-algebra as well, which I'm now certified to teach by WyzAnt. Students who need help in test preparation, such as for the ACT, SAT, GRE, and GED, can turn to me for help.

Although I presently work in an office, I enjoy teaching more, since I consider it my real calling in life. I really care whether my students learn the material that I'm teaching them. I'm very enthusiastic about the subject of history, since to understand the past is crucial to understanding who we are today and what we will be in the future. Algebra 1

European History

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in history from Michigan State. I specialized in European labor history, especially that of England, while taking coursework there. My M.A. compared the conditions and lives of English farm workers during the industrial revolution with American slaves in the South before the Civil War. I also have a B.A. in philosophy, which gave me familiarity with the great thinkers and influential ideas of the past which are often very important historically.

Because students of history and especially philosophy have to be good readers, my coursework shows I have very good reading comprehension myself. By using the methods that I was taught while majoring in teaching at Michigan State, such as reciprocal teaching, I can help students learn to read better as well. Geography

Because I was a stamp collector from when I was a child, I long had an interest in knowing where various countries were and something about them. I did take one college geography class in Chinese civilization at Spring Arbor College, but that's the limit of my formal specialized training in this area. My knowledge of geography comes mostly from general reading, including in the subject of history.

English

Because I majored in history and philosophy, I had to do a lot of reading, which included some of the great classics of Western Civilization. I also have done a good amount of reading in my spare time, which included various famous novels and non-fiction works. When I was an instructor at Davenport University, I used to lecture about various famous pieces of literature when teaching a Western Civilization/Humanities class, including by having students read aloud from excerpts from them.

While I majored in philosophy at Michigan State, I had to take a formal class in logic. I also studied some of what the philosopher Aristotle wrote about logic as part of my course requirements when getting a B.A. in philosophy. I also practically apply my knowledge of logic when writing essays and reading what others write or listening to what they say about current events, religious ideas, and politics.

Social Studies

Although my formal certifications for secondary teaching included history, economics, and business administration, I almost had enough credits years ago to get the overall social studies certification. My general background in this area is very good.
