Hello, my name is Ben. I have always enjoyed learning foreign languages on my own, and helping others who have a thirst to learn to speak a second language themselves. I am currently working on a personal goal to learn the ten most spoken languages in the world.

My experience with both English and Spanish is varied. I lived in Mexico as a young man, in addition to my schooling for Spanish. In Mexico, I tutored English for a high school student. I have taught English as a Second Language for churches here in the US for two years, teaching the class both in English and Spanish. I have tutored both English and Spanish for high school students, here in the US as well.

When tutoring a second language, I prefer to tutor with a mixture of formal studying of coursework and conversation. My personal experience has taught me that a second language is learned best by immersion in the language to be learned. Learning to speak a second language should be fun and exciting, not simply a repetitive drudgery.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I received a score of 34 on the English portion of the ACT on my first (and only) attempt at the test. I am comfortable with the ACT testing method and can readily explain the process to another.

ACT Reading

I received a score of 33 on the Reading portion of the ACT on my first (and only) attempt at the test. I am comfortable with the ACT testing method and can readily explain the process to another.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English as a Second Language in churches both in Michigan and North Carolina. I have worked as a conversation and study partner with several non-English speaking students.

Phonics

As part of my linguistic studies, I have focused extensively on correct pronunciation, in English as well as in foreign language. I have a thorough understanding of how to speak, listen, and comprehend sounds.

Spanish

I studied Spanish in school and competed in national level Spanish language competitions. Afterward I lived in Mexico, where I tutored a neighborhood boy in English. I have taught English as a Second Language to Spanish-speakers in several church groups, and have worked on a regular basis with Spanish-speaking employees, helping them to adjust to working in the United States.
