I have been a professional programmer and systems analyst for over 30 years, from the era of punch cards and paper tape through PCs and the Internet.

While still in high school, I reprogrammed a deathly slow attendance reporting application to make it so fast the card reader couldn't keep up with it. Today I develop small web sites and Java systems. And in between, I've created or collaborated on COBOL applications and designed relational databases.

In my career, I'm often consulted by coworkers for technical information and imaginative algorithms. My clients know my code yields correct results and doesn't break.

I've completed course work toward a Master's degree in Computer Science, and recently earned a Web Developer certification.

When you're tutored by me, don't expect to be spoon-fed. I know you'll learn best by figuring out the answers yourself; I'll just be there to guide you to success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

COBOL

In over 25 years of COBOL experience, I came to be known as the guy whose code was easy to maintain and doesn’t break.

For example, I used my expertise to reduce a suite of 25 programs to 5.

On another occasion, I wrote a complex program that was hailed as an example of how to maintain code integrity over the course of numerous additions to its function.

If COBOL can do it, I can show you how.

Computer Programming

I have over 30 years of experience, on PCs and mainframes, in a multitude of languages: COBOL, PL/I, Fortran, Delphi, Assembler, Delphi, Java, and probably one or two I've forgotten.

With a track record of accurate, innovative, and speedy work, I'll be an excellent helper for your programming problems.

General Computer

I can get you up and running with your new PC.

HTML

I've earned web developer certification from a local educational institution, and have designed a number of web sites, including the HTML, CSS, and Java background code.

Java

I've developed Java server code, and Java client code for large and small enterprises, and have won praise from client for productivity and customer satisfaction. I'm familiar with web programming, database processing, and multithreading.

Microsoft Excel

I’ve been using Excel as long as it’s been around—and that includes creating macros for use by major corporations.

I’ll help you through the ins and outs of data entry, formulas, range references, printing, and formatting.

Microsoft Word

I’ve been using Word since there was Word, and there’s hardly a trick I don’t know: page borders, styles, conditional mail merge, dynamic fields, bookmarking, macros, headers and trailers, and on and on.

Ask to see some of my work. Then ask me to show you how to do the same.

SQL

I have over 30 years of experience designing and using SQL databases on DB2, SQL Server, Microsoft Access, Teradata, Oracle, PostgreSql, and MySql.

As of this writing, I'm on a project for which I designed the DB2 database that we use every day.

In a recent project, I reorganized a SQL application to reduce the code inventory by more than half, cut execution time, eliminate errors, and produce a system that worked right the first time. I'll be happy to help you achieve similar results.
