I have a Bachelor of Arts in German from Calvin College 2008, Grand Rapids, MI. Former Army officer, stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany from September 2009 to May 2013.
I scored 3 of 3 in listening and reading on the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) in May 2011 (the upper level exam for a maximum rating of 5 was not offered).
TestDaF (Deutsch als Fremdsprache) certificate holder, August 2007. I scored 5 of possible 5 in reading, listening and speaking, scored 4 of possible 5 in writing.
I took the TestDaF at the Institut für Internationale Kommunikation (IIK) in Düsseldorf, Germany, where I took two language courses from July to August, 2007. I participated in student work exchange program in Minden, Germany from May to July, 2006.
My accent is mostly German. My greatest weakness is perhaps a tendency to pronounce an 'ch' when 'sch' is appropriate, for example 'der Tisch' or 'der Fisch'. Pretty good pronunciation of the German 'r', but not quite perfect. Germans often ask me where I am from, thinking I am German, or at least European; no one I have met who did not know I am American has been able to place my accent. Living in Schweinfurt for so long I have picked up some Frankish sounds (Franconia is the northern region of the state of Bavaria).
The picture was taken with my mom on the porch of Gen. George Washington's home in Mount Vernon.
