As my title says, I firmly believe that learning Latin and Ancient Greek does not have to be a painful experience. I will do my level best to get any student or tutee to actually enjoy learning a language.
Learning Latin and Ancient Greek, like learning any language, requires the student to in essence "relearn" how to read - for this reason, when teaching, I focus on strategies of reading that will allow the student to anticipate structures and construe meaning from context, rather than focusing on monotonous rote drills of forms. This does NOT mean that there will not be copious practice on forms - however, I feel learning forms is best accomplished by seeing said forms in context, rather than memorizing isolated words on a list.
I have taught Latin and Ancient Greek since 2003 at the university, high school and middle school levels, and am familiar with the "grammar-based" method of teaching Latin, as used by such texts as Wheelock's Latin, Latin for Americans, Jenney's Latin and a multitude of others, and with the "reading-based" method, exemplified by texts such as Cambridge Latin, Oxford Latin, Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata, and to some extent Latin Via Ovid and Disce!
I currently teach Latin in a Catholic high school in the D.C. area.
I have had 24 graduate hours in Classical Greek at the University of New Mexico, as part of my Master's in Comparative Literature, Concentration in the Classics.
I have taught Classical Greek at the 6th grade level for half a year to 6th grade students at Cottonwood Classical Charter School in Albuquerque, NM.
I have eighteen years of experience with Latin and with Ancient Greek, and have received no grade lower than an A in all Latin classes. I currently teach Latin I-III at a local Catholic school. My specialty is Roman elegiac poetry (Catullus, Propertius, Sulpicia), though I have broad experience in all major Roman authors. I am particularly fond of Vergil (Georgics and the Aeneid), as well as minor/obscure authors and works (the Ilias Latina of Publius Baebius Italicus, for example). I achieved a perfect score of 200 on the PRAXIS II, a standardized assessment used to qualify teachers for licensure.
