In an interview about the new series "The Big Brain Theory," Kal Penn discussed how the most successful of those very intelligent contestants were creative in their answers to technical problems. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography and have studied both astronomy and physical science extensively, and taken several college level classes in these subjects. When tutoring the sciences, I use my creativity to bring true understanding of the subject matter. I use demonstration and experimentation to help students grasp the subjects at a deeper level, increasing understanding, which then makes taking a test easier even when the questions are worded differently than expected.

When tutoring non-science subjects, I believe that it is important for students to understand the principles and history of the subject, as well as how it applies to everyday life. Whether a student is studying for a test or trying to gain a deeper understanding of subject, the key is to first know the rules of the subject and then see how they apply to what we already know.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have a strong proficiency in English and will help you to develop a deeper understanding of the subject. I will help you to figure out how you learn best and then help you develop study habits that make learning easier. Once you have a solid grasp of the subject I will help you to hone your test taking skills.

ACT Science

Studying for a test like the ACT requires that you understand how you learn best. Following a study plan to address the material in the way you learn best will ensure greater understanding and retention. It is also important to know how to take the test for the best results. As someone who has studied many varied subjects, I can help you to understand the material and how to prepare for the test.

Adobe Illustrator

As part of my degree program in photography I have studied Adobe Illustrator. I have used Illustrator for many years and am quite competent in the program. I have worked with many people, both at the university and since, to help them improve their skills and understanding of Adobe Illustrator.

Adobe Lightroom

I started using Adobe Lightroom when it was first released and have continued to the latest update. As a professional photographer with a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography I have worked in a darkroom and can help the student make the connection between the chemical processes and the digital processes. I offer a hand-on, guided approach when tutoring Lightroom.

Adobe Photoshop

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Arizona State University. I have used Adobe Photoshop for more than 20 years. I can teach specialized techniques and general understanding of the program and how it relates to photography.

Astronomy

I have taken several college level astronomy classes. I have tutored high school astronomy. I believe in an observational approach to understanding astronomy using telescopes, models and demonstrations.

Desktop Publishing

I have been creating flyers, posters and brochures since before the desktop computer and made the transition to desktop publishing software. I have created advertisements and promotional items for print and online. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and have studied graphic design extensively. I can tutor the student on design principles as well as the use of publishing software.

Dreamweaver

I have been using Dreamweaver since before it was bought by Adobe and I use it 4-5 times per week while working on one or more of my websites. I have created dozens of websites in Dreamweaver. I can teach the student to use Dreamweaver to create or update your own personal or business website. When tutoring, I start with the basics of the program and lead the student through more advanced techniques until they are able to accomplish their goal.

English

I have a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University and I have worked in public affairs and edited news stories. I have helped many people by proofreading their writing. In tutoring english, I use multiple activities, including explaining grammar, practicing role playing games and helping with the student's English homework.

General Computer

I studied computer programming in 1983 and then got my first IBM 8088. I have worked with PCs and Macs over the years. I can help you understand your computer and what you can do with it whether you are a beginner or just need a little help getting to the next level.

HTML

I have been writing HTML code since HTML2. I am still more comfortable writing in HTML than working with most editors. Even in Dreamweaver I write most of my code by hand. I can teach you basic coding, how to avoid common mistakes and how to debug.

Photography

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Arizona State University. I currently tutor one student. I have been a professional photographer for more than 10 years. I can teach to course specifics or to student interest.

Physical Science

I have taken college level physical science courses and I have a great deal of real-life experience working with fluid mechanics, electricity, sound and light, and structural integrity. As physical science is the study of the physical world around us, I teach an observational approach using experiments and model demonstrations.

Proofreading

I served as Public Affairs Officer in the Army and worked as an editor at a college newspaper for two years. Proofreading requires not only good spelling skills, but also a strong understanding of grammar, punctuation and structure.

Reading

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and I love to read for entertainment. I tutor by having the student read and discuss segments of the text to ensure comprehension.

Study Skills

It is important that students study in a way that best fits their learning style. Ask yourself a simple question: Are you a visual (see), auditory (hear), or kinesthetic (hands-on) learner? I can help you to evaluate your learning style and set up a study routine that helps you learn the most in the least amount of time. I am a life-long student, always studying new things to expand my knowledge and can help you to be better at studying, too. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography and have studied both astronomy and physical science extensively.

Writing

Writing, as a form of communication, must be undertaken with a sense of the unknown audience. If one writes as though they know reader and how the writing will be understood, one risks being misinterpreted. I can help you learn to create narratives that lead your readers to your conclusions no matter what their preconceived notions may be.
