I am a senior at Grand Valley State University pursuing a bachelors in Business with minors in both Math and Physics. As a member of the honors college I love to learn and enjoy the company of those who do as well. I have taken math classes up to and including Differential Equations, and Physics up to and including intermediate electromagnetic theory. Many of the problems I see people having with math is a way to understand how it is applied to the real world. My Physics (and Finance) classes have helped me learn how to convey these concepts and apply them to every day life.
I have taken business classes ranging from accounting and corporate finance to economics (micro and macro) and information systems. My family is involved in business and this has helped me provide real life applications to the theory I've learned.
Most of my tutoring experience comes from helping (and being helped by) fellow classmates in my physics classes. We would get together and work on problems, sharing knowledge such that everyone made sure everyone else knew what, cumulatively, the group knew. I have also worked with tutoring fellow classmates in my business classes. Most of my experience to date is with college students.
It is my firm belief that if an individual is able to make a connection in the real world with the material they are learning, it will be significantly easier and more enjoyable to learn such material. I do my best to incorporate real world examples into any lessons to 1) answer the "why should I know this" question, 2) make it less tedious and 3) create the ability to create problems for further understanding.
I enjoy teaching and helping those who want to learn. The level of help required is irrelevant as far as I am concerned so long as the student is willing to learn. In my view, effort far supersedes ability in that getting into a habit of bettering ones self and pushing for knowledge is far more important in the long run to professional and personal success than natural talent.
I tutor depending on the needs of the student. Many times this is going over previous homework, tests, and other assignments to make sure full understanding is gained. We will work on future homework assignments, studying for tests, and concept review as necessary. I had a tutor in high school for math and chemistry, and after we had finished what we were working on, we would delve deeper into the subject if it was interesting. This is a possibility if the student desires it.
On a more personal note, I am a singer, and have been most of my life. In 2006 I participated in the Blue Lake International Choir which toured Germany and France for three weeks. I am a member of the GVSU physics club and enjoy reading. I also have my SCUBA certification, which has allowed me to dive in several of Michigan's inner lakes, and the Caribbean.
