For 20 years, I have been a Teacher. The first part of my career was teaching French at the university level. I still enjoy French, but have decided to head in a new direction with my work focus: Special Education. While visiting a center-based school as part of a college class, I knew that I was meant to work with students with Special Needs. So, I earned my teaching endorsement in Autism Spectrum Disorder. For me, teaching is about making the world a better place---one student at a time!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Many of the students on my caseload for the past three years have had ADHD. I understand when a student needs a manipulative to work, or has to take frequent breaks. Each person works differently, and I understand that.

Autism

I have my Teaching Endorsement in ASD, and have been a Special Education for three years. Simply stated, I understand that every person is unique and valuable. Sometimes students face challenges when learning, and that's OK. I like figuring out what it takes to get someone to understand a lesson.

French

My B.A. and M.A. are both in French Literature; I studied at La Sorbonne and in the South of France (Gordes). I was fortunate to teach French at the university level for nearly 20 years, and two years at the high school level.
French has been one of my favorite subjects, since I was a teenager. I have traveled to France many times, as well as French Canada and New Orleans. All of these locations have stunning aspects to their cultures that draw me in over and over: Art, Food, Music.

Grammar

I am a native speaker of English, and Grammar has always been one of my strong points. Also, I am a Certified Teacher, which means that I have passed all necessary Basic Skills Tests with the State of Michigan. Lastly, I like helping students write; writing is fun!

Special Needs

This is my 5th year working as a Special Education Teacher. During that time, I have been fortunate to work with students of varying learning abilities: Autism, Aspergers, Specific Learning Disability, Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired, Otherwise Health Impaired, Emotionally Impaired. Each person has his/her own learning style, and I adapt easily to that specific need.
