Nirupama's Answer:

Shakespeare is important because he has made a significant contribution to the English literature through his work on Drama or Plays. Reading and analyzing his work also provide insight into the culture and society around those times.

Hope this answers your question.

what elements is represented by each electron cofiguration

{ar} 4s2

{kr} 5s4d 10 5p4

Asked by Calandra from Memphis, TN

Nirupama's Answer:

To keep it really simple, Ar has 18 electrons. Then adding the 2 electrons of the 4s orbital , we get 20 which is the atomic number of Calcium whose symbol is Ca.

Similarly, Kr has 36 electrons. Then adding the 2 electrons of 5s, 10 electrons of 4d and 4 electrons of 5p orbitals, we get 36 + 2 + 10 + 4 = 52 and this is the atomic number of Tellurium whose symbol is Te.

Now you could apply this to other similar questions using the periodic table.

graph -1/2x + 1/6y = 2/3

graph -1/2x + 1/6y = 2/3

+ more- less
Asked by Teri from Mosinee, WI

Nirupama's Answer:

Was not sure if you meant -1/(2x)+ 1/(6y) = 2/3 or (-1/2)x + (1/6)y = 2/3

The solution for -1/(2x)+ 1/(6y) = 2/3 is as follows:

-1/(2x) + 1/(6y) = 2/3

could be rewritten as follows by adding 1/(2x) to both sides of the equation.

-1/(2x) + 1/(2x) + 1/(6y) = 2/3 + 1/(2x)

1/(6y) = 1/(2x) + 2/3.

Now we add the components on the right side with common denominator

1/(6y) = (3 + 4x)/(6x)

which can be further simplified as follows

1/y = (3 + 4x)/x

Now we have to find the multiplicative inverses on both sides. That is,

y = x/ (3 + 4x) or y = x/ (4x + 3)

Now to plot a graph, we have to find the ordered pairs or the co-ordinates of the points and then join them.

For eg: when x= 0, y= 0; x= 3, y= 3/15 or 1/5; we have ordered pairs and they are P1 (0,0) and P2 (3,1/5). P1 and P2 can be connected.

calculating the van't Hoff factor

When 9.12 g of HCl was dissolved in 190 g of water, the freezing point of the solution was -4.65oC.  What is the value of the van't Hoff factor for HCl?

Here is what I did-

I know that I use: deltaT= Kf x m x i

rearranged to solve for i: deltaT/Kf x m

solving for molality:

mol HCl=0.250

kg solvent= .190

m=0.250/.190= 1.32

i= -4.65oC/1.86 x 1.32 = -1.89

I am not sure if the value for i can be negative or if I did the problem correctly.  Please help me!  Thanks!

Nirupama's Answer:

Although for this question, you will have to determine the Van't Hoff factor using the formula, there is a neat of verifying your answer.

Let us denote the Van't Hoff factor by i.

The i value for a molecule like say glucose (does not dissociate when dissolved in a solvent like water)is generally considered as 1.

The i value for a strong base or acid or salt is obtained by adding the number of anions and cations.

For eg: MgClhas Mg+2  and 2 Cl-  thereby a total of 3 ions.

But for a weak acid or a weak base i is considered to be 1.

Now for HCl, since it is a strong acid and is dissociated as H+ and Cl-, we can expect it to have i value as 2 and the answer that you obtained as 1.89 is fairly close to 2.0

Hope that additional explanation helps.

4 x-2 z = b-2 solve for x

4 x-2 z = b-2

Asked by Seb from Sequim, WA

Nirupama's Answer:

4x - 2z = b-2.

In order to solve for x, shift all the other terms to the R.H.S (Right Hand Side of the equation).

4x = b-2 +2z

Now divide both sides by 4.

x = b/4  -2/4 + 2z/4  (Now we have to simplify or reduce the fractions)

   =  b/4 -1/2 + z/2    which could be rewritten as

   =  b/4 + z/2 - 1/2.
