I hold a Master's Degree in Education, and I am certified as a Reading Specialist and ESL/ESOL Instructor. In addition to many years as a classroom Teacher and school Principal, I also taught in and was the Coordinator for a large ESL/Bilingual program in the Dallas, TX area for 8-years. This program had an extensive Adult Education component as well. I have been certified to teach in Texas, Georgia and the State of Michigan. I am trained and certified as a Montessori Teacher as well. As a Tutor, I will work with you on developing your skills in English, rather than teaching specific subject areas. I find that in many cases, improvement in English comprehension and fluency is all that's needed to help a student achieve mastery in content specific areas.
In addition, I am a published writer and have extensive experience in seminar and training presentations. I can assist you in editing, proof-reading, and creating professional presentations in your written communications.
Let's learn together!
I have had many hours of specialized training in identifying early signs of possible ADD/ADHD in students, as well as having worked with children in my classrooms who were diagnosed with this disorder. As an Administrator, I work with parents, teachers and Special Education professionals to assist in structuring goals, modifying instruction, incorporate appropriate strategies for learning, and create customized student planning for successful outcomes.
Attention deficit disorder, also known as ADHD or ADD,is not merely a problem with paying attention. Whether you’re a child or an adult, ADHD makes it difficult to manage the multiple tasks of daily life, especially complex tasks that require organization, planning, and sustained focus.
ADHD is challenging, but once you understand the problem and how it affects your life as an adult or as a child, you can learn to compensate for areas of weakness and take advantage of your many strengths and talents. People with ADD/ADHD tendencies are often extremely bright and quite capable, but are hindered in traditional learning settings where the environment calls for calm and quiet. There are many ways to approach learning for these persons by incorporating hands-on, creative instruction while promoting focus and extending time on task. I have worked with many students who require differing approaches to acquire their
skills and I truly enjoy these types of learners!
As a certified Reading Specialist, I have extensive training in the best methods and approaches needed to work with students who are Dyslexic. Dyslexia is often seen in very bright persons who may be processing information at an accelerated rate, causing difficulty in following written text. Dyslexia can often crossover into speech and writing patterns as well. Given proper assistance, the Dyslexic student will learn to modify habits and accommodate this challenge, leading to reduced anxiety and increased abilities. Early identification and intervention is the key to successfully overcoming challenges, however students of any age can benefit greatly from support in understanding Dyslexia. Although studies have not confirmed an hereditary link, it is common to find several family members who share Dyslexic traits. With guidance and support, Dyslexia does not have to be an overwhelming condition.
I am a certified Teacher in Michigan in all subject areas EC (Early Childhood) through 8th Grade. I have taught Elementary Education for many years and have Elementary Administration experience as well. In combination with my specialized certifications as a Reading Specialist and ESL/ESOL instructor, I meet and exceed State standards as a Highly Qualified educator. I have a working knowledge of Core Curriculum and State Academic Assessment testing.
As a certified Reading Specialist and trained in the Montessori method as well, I have worked with many students on a Phonetic approach to assist with Reading. My experience has been not only with employing Phonics-based curriculum in the classroom, but also working individually as a tutor/mentor with children over many years. In earning ESL/ESOL certification, a large portion of the requirements focused around presenting second-language learning through Phonics to assist students in hearing the sounds and blends of English, which often differ from those of other languages.
Difficulty with phonics is the most common reading problem among beginning readers, and some children benefit from individualized phonics instruction that is more intensive and in-depth than that provided in even the most exemplary classroom.
The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes and graphemes by blending these sound-spelling patterns involves focus on the spoken and written units within words. Look for evidence that phonics skills are being introduced in your child's classroom in a specific sequence as part of a comprehensive reading program. I am devoted to a phonics-based approach to reading and highly skilled in teaching using this approach.
As a school Principal and Program Coordinator, I am accustomed to being called upon to speak with parents, teachers and coworkers in a variety of Professional Development workshops, Parenting Classes, and District forums/meetings. I have been a speaker and presenter in large forums (200+) people, and smaller, more intimate sessions of 20-40 people. I can work with a potential public speaker on body language, motivating audiences, gaining and holding the attention of groups through interactive presentations, preparing visual aids, handouts or other materials for presentation. In addition, I can assist a speaker in overcoming "jitters" and feeling comfortable before an audience. I am a trained presenter for the well-known program "Love and Logic" and greatly enjoy all public speaking.
