As a second career I decided to return to school and get my elementary teaching certificate. It was always a desire of mine to teach, and so I took a leap of faith and quit my full-time position as a Dental Hygienist. Because I had my BBA from SVSU I was able to go through the accelerated teacher certification program. As part of that program, I did a full year of student teaching in the Saginaw Public School District. Upon graduating in 2004, I taught for the Pinconning Area Schools for 6 years. Following that, I taught 4/5 grade for approximately 2 years at Bay City Academy in Bay City, Michigan. Most recently I was hired by Midland Public Schools as a Title 1 Teacher for the 2014 half of the school year and as a Summer School Teacher at present.

My minors are math and science and I also have had many courses in teaching reading and doing assessments. I am currently working on my master's degree at SVSU, and will soon have my ZA endorsement. I have been married for 32 years and am a mother of two wonderful children, both excellent students, talented musicians and athletes. My daughter, a college graduate, now lives and teaches in Newark, NJ. My son is 16 and a busy high school sophomore. My greatest strengths are my organizational skills, nurturing personality, preparedness, creativity, and passion for teaching. I feel highly qualified to teach all subjects through the 8th grade.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my Permanent Elementary Teaching Certificate from SVSU plus 18 graduate credits toward a masters degree. I am licensed to teach all subjects K-5 and (6th-8th grade in a SCC). I have nine years of classroom teaching experience, and most recently taught 5th grade. As a bonus, I also have background and experience teaching in the arts!

Phonics

During my undergraduate and graduate studies I have had numerous courses dealing with Phonics. I am MLPP certified, have used DRA reading assessments, Flynt/Cooter reading assessments and am trained in Dibbles. I have experience with tutoring individual students in phonics and reading comprehension.

Study Skills

I have extensive coursework and experience in education. I have my Permanent Teaching Certificate (Elementary K-5 all subjects) and (K-8 Self CC). I am very good at documentation and paperwork and extremely well organized and efficient. I have successfully taught several grades, managed assignments, grades, PT conferences, and organized fundraisers and field trips. My field experiences, student teaching, and nine years of classroom teaching experience have developed these abilities and attributes.
