Vocabulary

Vocabulary-building is based on words used in the ACT and SAT tests. Flash cards help students increase word recognition, while sentence completion exercises test comprehension. Vocabulary is also tested by matching a definition to a word, and a word to a definition, thus assuring mastery. Students may request an online ACT/SAT pre-test to confirm their competency.

Grammar

Grammar and Usage represent 16% of the ACT test. Therefore, instruction will focus on student's of agreement between subject and verb, between pronoun and antecedent, and between modifiers and the word modified; verb formation; pronoun case; formation of comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs; and idiomatic usage.

Writing

Focus on essay-writing skills, with special emphasis on analytical and argumentative essays. Tutor for mastery of essay elements, including introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Emphasize methods for building effective paragraphs--idea development, clarity, and conciseness.

Sentence-building skills focus on understanding of relationships between and among clauses, placement of modifiers, and shifts in construction.

Tutoring in English focuses on grade-specific topics (e.g., literature genres) and on overall competency in writing. Proficiency in sentence construction, writing strategies, and style are emphasized. Tutoring may focus on grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary, if warranted. The overall goal of instruction will be mastery of areas emphasized on the ACT or SAT tests.

Literature

Students will become familiar with the literary traditions of the Western canon, and the literary traditions of other cultures and languages. Provide instruction in strategies and methods to achieve flawless texts, utilizing a number of expert college and university websites.

SAT Writing

Emphasis is on those areas tested in the SAT exam: English vocabulary, grammar, word roots and prefixes, sentence completion, and essay writing.

The writing section of the SAT includes multiple choice questions and a brief essay. ACT English

The ACT test focuses on two major areas: Usage/Mechanics, including punctuation, grammar and usage, and sentence structure; and Rhetorical Skills, comprising strategy, organization, and style.

Students preparing for the ACT will take a cost-free pretest to establish their level of proficiency. Tutoring--face-to-face or online--will target weak areas. A post-test will establish mastery of the deficient areas.
